Prandelli may reconsider position as Italy coach

KRAKOW, Poland (AP) -Cesare Prandelli said Monday he may reconsider his decision to stay on as Italy coach if he is not given more time with his players.

Prandelli had said after Italy's 4-0 loss to Spain in the European Championship final on Sunday that he would remain at the helm. But a day later, he said "I respect the federation and everyone who wants to do something, like us. If the problems aren't solved in six months, if I have to coach a squad only twice in eight months, I will reflect on things.

"I decided to stay because I saw there is a common desire to change. I met with the federation and they made me certain of that. They told me they wanted to continue on this road."

Prandelli was upset that Italian clubs did not allow him to hold any mini-training camps with his squad during the season but he has been assured that Serie A teams will be reminded of the national team's importance.

Italy's next match is an Aug. 15 friendly against England, which comes four days after the Italian Super Cup between Juventus and Napoli in Beijing.

"We want to involve all the different parties," Prandelli said. "If we play on Aug. 15 against England, when will the Italian Super Cup be played? Aug. 12 ... Where will they play? In Beijing. People need to be sensitive to the national team's needs, no one cares at all about the Azzurri and then everyone's a patriot only during a tournament."

Prandelli is keen for Italy to learn lessons from Spain, which completed an unprecedented hat-trick of two continental titles and a World Cup.

"We have to change," he said. "We played a team that has been working with consistency on a project. It's a shame we didn't face Spain with a couple more days' rest, that's the only slight regret. But we have to recognize their superiority and their ability for consistency.

"I want to see that we want to change, and it has to be a long term change. Winning the Euros would have been good, but it would have shaken the equilibrium. Maybe we're not yet ready: when we will be, we will win again and again, with consistency and without ups and downs."

Prandelli said that this change will only come about if the federation works with the league and the clubs.

"We have to find and evaluate players who have the potential to take over from lads such as (Andrea) Pirlo, even though I hope he plays another two years with us," Prandelli said. "We need someone near him who can be ready, but if he doesn't play European football how can he grow?

"We want to work with the clubs, we don't want to change their plans, we want to check how the lads are progressing every two months or so. If I have just three training session every eight months, I don't know if I'm up to it. I'm a hands-on coach, someone who works on the pitch, I would need to take Italy forward by working like that, in this way."

J&J seeks OK for first drug against resistant TB

(AP) ? Johnson & Johnson said Monday that it is seeking U.S. approval for the first new type of medicine to fight deadly tuberculosis in more than four decades.

The experimental drug, called bedaquiline, also would be the first medicine specifically for treating multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis. That's an increasingly common form in which at least two of the four primary TB drugs don't work.

Tuberculosis, caused by bacterial infection of the lungs and other body areas, is the world's No. 2 killer of adults among infectious diseases.

J&J's Janssen Research & Development unit created the drug, which was tested in several hundred patients with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis in two mid-stage studies lasting for six months. Some patients were studied for about 1 1/2 years.

The company this fall is to begin late-stage testing that will compare bedaquiline to dummy pills over nine months in about 600 patients; each will also take six other drugs that are the standard treatments for tuberculosis. That study is aimed at seeing whether treatment for resistant tuberculosis can be reduced to nine months from the current 18 to 24 months recommended by the World Health Organization.

Roughly one-third of the world's population is estimated to be infected with the bacteria causing tuberculosis. It remains latent in most people for many years but can be activated by another infection or serious health problem.

TB is rare in the U.S. but kills about 1.4 million people a year worldwide, with about 150,000 of those succumbing to the increasingly common multidrug-resistant forms.

Janssen's head of infectious diseases, Dr. Wim Pays, said the company will also apply for approval of bedaquiline in other countries where TB is very common.

The disease is a serious problem in developing countries because it takes so long to cure and many patients stop taking their pills once they begin to feel better. That helps bacteria still alive in the patient to develop resistance to the medicines already taken, making future treatment much more difficult.

In afternoon trading, J&J shares rose 31 cents to $67.87. They are approaching their 52-week high of $68.05 set almost a year ago.

Syrians brand world talks on crisis a failure

The opposition and state media on Sunday both branded an international plan for a transition in strife-torn Syria a failure, as the death toll for a weekend of violence topped 140.

World powers meeting in Geneva on Saturday agreed that the transition plan could include current regime members, but the West did not see any role for President Bashar al-Assad in a new unity government.

Russia and China insisted that Syrians themselves must decide how the transition takes place, rather than allow others to dictate their fate.

Moscow and Beijing, which have twice blocked UN Security Council resolutions on Syria, signed up to the final agreement that did not make any explicit call for Assad to cede power.

Official Syrian media and the opposition Local Coordination Committees (LCC) group demonstrated rare agreement in slamming the outcome.

The meeting "failed," trumpeted Al-Baath, newspaper of the ruling party of the same name.

"The agreement of the task force on Syria in Geneva on Saturday resembles an enlarged meeting of the UN Security Council where the positions of participants remained the same," it said.

The LCC, which organises protests on the ground in Syria, said the outcome showed once again a failure to adopt a common position.

It called the transition accord "just one version, different in form only, of the demands of Russian leaders allied to the Assad regime and who cover it militarily and politically in the face of international pressure."

Burhan Ghalioun, a senior member and former head of the opposition Syrian National Council, told pan-Arab television Al-Arabiya that "this is the worst international statement yet to emerge from talks on Syria."

According to the SNC's official Facebook page, he described the plan as a "farce."

Ghalioun called a "mockery" the notion that Syrians should negotiate with "their executioner, who has not stopped killing, torturing... and raping women for 16 months."

SNC spokeswoman Basma Qadmani, however, told AFP in Ankara there were some "positive elements" in the deal, although "important elements remain too ambiguous... and the plan is too vague to foresee real and immediate action."

"The first one is that the final declaration says that the participants agree to say that the Assad family cannot rule the country any more, and therefore the Assad family cannot lead the transition period."

"The second positive element is the agreement that the transition should comply with the legitimate aspirations of Syrian people.

"For us this means that Assad should go because Syrian people have already said that they want Assad to go."

Iran, a strong ally of Assad, said the Geneva meeting was "unsuccessful" because Damascus and Tehran were not invited.

The United States and European nations reportedly opposed the presence of Iran, although UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan and UN chief Ban Ki-moon had wanted Tehran to attend.

Opposition groups are to hold a two-day meeting in Cairo from Monday and are also expected to hold talks on Tuesday with Arab ministers in a bid to agree on a shared platform, Egyptian media and the Arab League said.

The Geneva deal came despite initial pessimism over the talks amid deep divisions between the West and China and Russia on how to end the violence that the Observatory says has killed more than 15,800 since March 2011.

Syria's neighbour Turkey, which attended the Geneva talks, scrambled fighter jets after Syrian helicopters flew close to its border, the army said on Sunday, hiking tensions following last month's downing of a Turkish plane.

Six F-16 warplanes took off from airbases in south Turkey on Saturday after Syrian helicopters flew closer to the border than is normal, the army said, specifying there had been three incidents but no violation of Turkish airspace.

In weekend violence, more than 140 people were killed across Syria, including 120 on Saturday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. On Sunday, at least 21 people were killed, including five in the central province of Hama, according to the Britain-based watchdog.

Annan said on Saturday it was up to the Syrians to decide who they wanted in a unity government. But he added: "I would doubt that Syrians... would select people with blood on their hands to lead them."

The United States and France both said it was clear there was no future role for Assad.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague admitted the deal was a "compromise agreement" as Russia played up the fact that it had convinced other world powers that it would be "unacceptable" to exclude any party from the transition.

Moscow is loath to cast aside its ally Assad, even as relations between them have cooled.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said: "How exactly the work on a transition to a new stage is conducted will be decided by the Syrians themselves.

"There are no demands to exclude from this process any one group. This aspect had been present in many of our partners' proposals. We have convinced them that this is unacceptable."

Choosing a Roofing Solution | Home Decor

Of all the home improvement projects you could undertake, your roof is probably the most expensive, tricky, and risky one. No matter how you do it, there?s going to be a great deal of work that needs doing, and you either have to pay someone else to do it or else go through the hassle of doing it yourself. Not many could actually enjoy the work that has to go into repairing a roof, and yet it?s an important part of being a homeowner. Problems with your roof are usually huge problems, or else they have the capacity to turn into huge problems if you don?t take care of them right away.

Things to Think About

The thing about working on your roof is that one error can lead to a host of other problems. Therefore it?s extremely important to guarantee you work as effectively as possible on each problem area, and do all you can to avoid causing any further problems you?ll have to deal with later. Sometimes you can do patch-up jobs, but at other times you need to fix the problem at its root and solve the errors deep inside the construction of your house.

roofing solution

Fascias and Soffits

For instance, many people think that they can work with old fascias, simply replacing or covering the outer surface and leaving the original material as is. The problem that arises out of doing that is that often the fasica layer underneath sustains damage from the long years it has gone through, and therefore the new outer capping is simply a shell covering a deteriorating mass. Sooner or later those old fascias are going to collapse. The only way to avoid this problem is to get rid of your old materials, when you need to, and install a new and improved fascia solution?such as auPVC fascia.

Shingles

Your shingles are also important, both for their visual value and for the actual function they perform. Good shingles can be affordable, but you have to be sure to choose an option that is sturdy and durable. Appearance should only be your secondary consideration, though still a good one to make.

Gutters

If you have improper gutters in your home, then that could be something contributing to other problems occurring on your roof. A good roof needs proper drainage, particularly when it is located in a rainy area. Without a good gutter, puddles and pools can form and soak into the construction of your roof?causing serious and lasting damage.
