No matter the state of the housing market, there are real estate professionals doing business. Despite gloomy housing and economic news at the national level, real estate agents and brokers in some markets are seeing a high dollar volume in home sales due to rising prices and relatively vibrant local economies.

Inman News examined total sales, median sales price, real estate licensee data and Realtor membership counts in dozens of metro areas across the country to develop a list of 10 metros where real estate professionals are doing comparatively well in terms of sales and average total dollar volume in sales per Realtor.

The average total dollar volume in sales per Realtor was calculated by multiplying the average number of sales per Realtor by the median sales price in a given metro in the 12 months between June 2010 and May 2011.

Half of the markets on the resulting list are in the South (four are in Texas), three are in the West, one is in the Midwest, and one is in the Northeast. The 10 markets are, in order: Seattle-Bellevue-Everett, Wash.; Fort Worth-Arlington, Texas; Denver-Aurora-Broomfield, Colo.; Salt Lake City; San Antonio-New Braunfels, Texas; Pittsburgh; Dallas-Plano-Irving, Texas; Kansas City Mo.-Kan.; Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos, Texas; and Nashville-Davidson?Murfreesboro?Franklin, Tenn.

Total average sales volume per Realtor in the year ending in May 2011 ranged from $599,171 in the Nashville metro to $1.54 million in the Seattle metro. Sales per Realtor ranged from 3.2 in the Austin metro to 8.3 in the Fort Worth metro. For some metros, a high median sales price offset a relatively low sales rate to result in a higher than usual average total dollar volume in sales.

While all Realtors are real estate licensees, it?s important to note that in a given market there are some real estate licensees who are not Realtors. And the sales rate per Realtor statistic does not account for sales by non-Realtors ? including sales by real estate licensees and for-sale-by-owner transactions ? in a given market.

It?s also important to note that two?real estate?sales associates can profit in every sales transaction, as the typical sale features a real estate agent working on the ?sell? side (or listing side) of the deal and another agent working on the ?buy? side of the deal. And it is typical for sales associates on both sides of the deal to share a portion of their commission income with their broker.

Seven out of the 10 markets saw their median sales price rise year-over-year in May, and none of the remaining three saw double-digit price drops. On a month-to-month basis, all 10 either saw the sales price remain roughly flat or rise in May. That same month, the U.S. median sales price fell 3.2 percent on a year-over-year basis, to $152,000, according CoreLogic data.

Seven out of 10 markets had a median sales price higher than the national median ($150,500) in the 12 months between June 2010 and May 2011. Median prices ranged from $107,250 in the Pittsburgh metro to $302,000 in the Seattle metro.

Not surprisingly, the 10 metros, chosen for their total sales and total dollar volume in sales per real estate professional, turned out to have better-than-average local economies. None of the 10 markets had unemployment rates higher than the national rate in June, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Only the Seattle market had a rate equal to the nonseasonally adjusted national rate of 9.3 percent, while the rest had lower jobless rates. Nine out of 10 markets had lower foreclosure rates than the national rate in the second quarter, when 1 in 111 housing units nationwide received a foreclosure filing, according to data from foreclosure data site RealtyTrac. Only Salt Lake City had a somewhat higher rate, with 1 in 108 units in the area receiving a foreclosure filing.

According to the National Association of Realtors? state existing-home sales data, there was an average of five sales per Realtor in the second quarter of this year. Among the top 10 states with a high rate of sales per Realtor, most were in the Midwest or the South.

For data-quality purposes, only markets with at least 1,500 sales posted in May 2011 were considered for this report. While most of the 10 states above also posted high sales rates for real estate licensees (not just Realtors), most metros in these states did not meet the 1,500-sales-count threshold and were therefore not included in this report.

Another consequence of this threshold is that the populations of each of the 10 markets exceeded 1 million, and ranged from 1.1 million to 4.2 million.

Nine out of the 10 markets are projected to see double-digit population growth by 2020, according to data from data analysis firm ProximityOne. While the national population is expected to rise 8.9 percent between 2010 and 2020, each of the 10 markets except Pittsburgh is expected to see double-digit increases, from 10.6 percent in the Kansas City metro to 33.1 percent in the Austin metro.

The Pittsburgh area?s population is expected to stay virtually flat at 2.4 million.

Houston Mom Got Daughter Abortion To Hide Rape, Officials Say

HOUSTON -- A Houston woman got an abortion for her 12-year-old mentally disabled daughter in an effort to hide evidence that her son sexually assaulted the girl, authorities said.

The woman made her initial court appearance Monday on a charge of tampering with evidence. Prosecutors allege in court documents that she took her daughter to a Cleveland clinic, where she had an abortion on Oct. 22.

Her 19-year-old son was indicted earlier this year on three counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child under 14 years old.

The names of the accused are being withheld to protect the girl's identity. The Associated Press doesn't identify sexual assault victims.

During an interview with investigators in December, the girl, who has moderate mental retardation, said her brother had sex with her in March 2010 and on several other occasions.

"She said she got pregnant because he had sex with her and said her mom took her to Ohio to have an operation so it wouldn't hurt when the baby came out. (The girl) said she told her father ... that her brother ... was the father of the baby," according to a probable cause affidavit.

Authorities say the mother knew of the investigation in the case and she "attempted to conceal evidence, the fetus/biological evidence, by taking (her daughter) to have an abortion in Ohio so the evidence would not be available for the investigation," according to the affidavit. Investigators say they recovered the fetus. The girl was about 22 weeks pregnant at the time.

The 50-year-old mother had tried getting the abortion a week earlier, but her daughter was too hysterical at the time, according to court documents.

Court records did not show an attorney for the woman, who made her initial court appearance on Monday. She did not immediately return a telephone message left Tuesday at her home.

Her son's attorney, Christian Capitaine, said that the mother, as a concerned parent, had every right to seek an abortion for her daughter, whom the woman might have believed would not be capable of taking care of an infant.

"I do expect the evidence will show she did not do that in order to prevent her son's prosecution or in order to somehow tamper with evidence," Capitaine said.

Capitaine said that at the time of the abortion, the mother was unaware an investigation was going on that was focusing on her son and that the son wasn't charged in the case until April.

"What you have is a case where folks are jumping to conclusions," he said.

Capitaine said the son denies sexually assaulting his sister. His case has not been set for trial.

The girl, now 13, and her 12-year-old sister were taken into custody in November by child welfare officials. The girls' family relinquished their parental rights earlier this month and the girls remain in foster care, said Gwen Carter, a spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services.

"The girls are doing as well as can be expected. Our plan is to look for an appropriate adoptive home for them," Carter said.

Spotify, SoundHound combine forces in apps ? but only in Europe (Appolicious)

A couple of big-name mobile apps are joining forces to make finding and listening to music a lot easier ? at least in Europe.

SoundHound, which provides mobile apps that use a device?s microphone to ?listen? to songs playing nearby, then uses an Internet connection to identify them, has teamed up with Spotify to provide new services through both companies. Spotify is the European on-demand music streaming service that recently crossed the ocean to the U.S. after much waiting. It allows users to find and play pretty much any song they want to ? it has a catalogue of more than 15 million tracks ? in either an ad-supported version or for a monthly fee.

Both services provide some pretty useful mobile apps, and both appear on both Google?s Android operating system and on Apple?s iOS platform. The combination of the two opens up the ability for mobile users to use SoundHound to discover information about songs, then immediately launch Spotify to play them. It adds even more cool features to SoundHound, which recently added lyric tracking to its bag of app tricks.

That?s not a bad deal, considering that SoundHound could formerly bring users to the tracks they either searched for using the service (you can type in searches by band, song and album) or identified by sound, but only made them available for purchase. The partnership with Spotify, instead, makes it possible to listen to the song immediately, with no purchase required.

According to SoundHound?s press release, Spotify integration will be available to both free and paid SoundHound users, although you will need to be a Spotify Premium user, which runs about $7.99 a month. That removes the ads from Spotify and gives you unlimited access to the service, which can also play the music you have on your computer as part of your playlists designed in Spotify.

The only trouble with the whole partnership as it stands is that it?s exclusive to Europe. You?ll need to be a premium subscriber to Spotify in Europe to take full advantage of the link-ups with SoundHound, and the press release doesn?t say anything about the features possibly bridging the Atlantic.

It seems kind of doubtful that the SoundHound/Spotify partnership won?t reach to the U.S., though. It?s possible the two companies will use Europe as a testing ground, where Spotify is incredibly popular, to see if users start to gravitate toward the new features before spreading them to new markets. But it does seem that SoundHound will gain a lot more usefulness with Spotify?s help, and Spotify will become even cooler with the addition of SoundHound song-searching.

Austin has been the seasonal home to the world?s largest urban bat colony since sometime in the 1980s, when the city reinforced a downtown bridge with beams that, unintentionally, offered an ideal habitat for bats. Locals were initially unnerved when hundreds of thousands of?bats arrived each spring to nest, but worries subsided once wildlife groups pointed out that bats are a great natural pesticide.

Since then, tourists and locals have been gathering downtown each summer evening at sunset to watch a sky-darkening curtain of bats emerge from the bridge.

Last year there was so much rain in Austin that the bats often didn?t emerge until after dark, so?few visitors were able to see the bat show. But this year there?s a drought. ?That means there are fewer crops in the fields and fewer pests, so the bats have to forage longer and emerge earlier,? said James Eggers, director of education for Austin-based Bat Conservation International.

On an average summer night, between?2,000 and 3,000?bat-watchers gather in downtown Austin to watch the bats emerge. During Saturday?s free Bat Fest, however, organizers expect a crowd of up to 40,000 bat fans.

Will all that music and partying bother the bats? ?Well, despite the thousands of vehicles that cross the bridge each day, this colony has chosen this bridge,? said Eggers. ?They?re apparently happy in that home. Even with the music and all those people, we don?t see that bats emerge any differently.?

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Since Steve Jobs' return to Apple Inc. in 1997 as CEO, the company has been on an unparalleled upswing, highlighted by the immense popularity of the iPad and iPhone.

Now, with Jobs no longer leading, Apple will have to prove it can keep its momentum. If the recent past is any indication, the company will continue to move forward.

Apple said late Wednesday that Jobs, 56, resigned from the CEO post, in a move that seems motivated by his ongoing, yet still unspecified health issues. Jobs had taken an indefinite medical leave in January, marking his third such leave in seven years. Jobs, who co-founded Apple in 1976, previously survived pancreatic cancer and received a liver transplant.

Taking on the role of board chairman, Jobs now passes the CEO role Tim Cook, 50, the company's chief operating officer. Cook had been acting CEO since January. For years, he has been running Apple's day-to-day operations, and has long been seen as the natural successor. He also served as Apple's leader for two months in 2004 while Jobs battled cancer, and again for five-and-a-half months in 2009 when Jobs received a liver transplant. The company has thrived under Cook's leadership, briefly becoming the most valuable company in America earlier this month.

Cook is not nearly as recognizable as Jobs, who after returning from a 12-year hiatus in 1997 became the very public face of Apple, clad in his signature blue jeans, black turtleneck and wire-rimmed glasses when trotting out the company's iPhones, iPads, iPods at immensely popular and anticipated media events. Though Jobs has looked increasingly frail, he emerged from his leave twice this year to tout products at such events: First, he unveiled the second version of Apple's iPad tablet computer in March. Then, in June, he resurfaced to show off Apple's iCloud music synching service.

But while Jobs is the most recognized person at Apple, he is not the only one responsible for the company's success. Many industry watchers believe that despite his importance, Apple will continue to innovate and not just survive, but thrive.

Says Cross Research analyst Shannon Cross: "Steve Jobs put in place at Apple a culture of innovation."

And its innovation has translated to sales. With Cook running the company, Apple sold 9.25 million iPads during the most recent quarter, which ended in June, bringing sales to nearly 29 million iPads since they first began selling in April 2010. Apple also sold 20.3 million iPhones in the same period, which was millions more than analysts expected. The company's stock has risen 8 percent since Jobs announced his most recent medical leave.

Cook's track record at Apple is strong. The first time he was in charge back in 2004, things went so well that Apple promoted him from executive vice president to chief operating officer in 2005.

During the second time, which lasted from mid-January to the end of June 2009, Apple released a new version of the iPhone and updated laptop computers on schedule. The company also announced that its iTunes app store hit a major milestone: More than one billion apps were downloaded within the first nine months of its existence.

Apple's stock rose 62 percent during that time, satisfying investors' concerns over Jobs' absence.

Cook, an Alabaman with short, gray hair and a broad, thin-lipped smile, has been an asset to Apple since his arrival in 1998. He is credited with tuning Apple's manufacturing process to solve chronic product delays and supply problems. His inventory management skills helped Apple build up its $72.6 billion hoard of cash and marketable securities ? funds that it can use to keep its lead in the portable electronics market.

Like IBM, McDonald's or Ford, all of which lost visionary CEOs, Apple is not necessarily dependent on the immortality of the genius behind it, says Terry Connelly, dean of the Ageno School of Business at Golden Gate University in San Francisco.

"A company is dependent on its ability to institutionalize that genius in the corporate DNA," he says. "Apple shows every sign of having done that. We will see that when we see how Cook responds to competitive pressure."

And, as Cross points out, Cook won't be leading Apple alone. His supporting team includes Jonathan Ive, who oversees the elegant, minimalist design of Apple's products; Ron Johnson, who runs Apple's stores; Philip Schiller, the marketing chief; and Scott Forstall, who supervises the iPhone software.

"The bench at Apple is extremely strong," Cross says. "He has a good group of executives behind him."

And consumers ? the group Apple really depends on to make its products popular ? may not be that affected by the change.

Apple customers don't buy the company's products because of Steve Jobs, Gartner Research analyst Michael Gartenberg says, they buy Apple products because they're Apple products. Without Jobs, he believes the company's challenge will be the same as it was with him: continuing to find ways to raise the bar with its consumer electronics.

"Yes, this is quite some transition at the end of Steve's role and his time at Apple, but it doesn't mean Apple itself will fundamentally change," he says. "Certainly Apple's competition would be foolish to think this is a situation they could somehow capitalize on."

China official tells Web firms to control content (AP)

BEIJING ? A Communist Party leader has told China's Internet companies to tighten control over material online as Beijing cracks down on dissent and tries to block the rise of Middle East-style protests.

The party secretary for Beijing, Liu Qi, issued the warning following a visit this week to Sina Corp., which operates a popular microblogging site, according to the party-published newspaper Beijing Daily.

Internet companies should "strengthen management and firmly prevent the spread of fake and harmful information," Liu was quoted as saying after the visit Monday to Sina. He said companies should "resist fake and negative information."

Communist authorities encourage Internet use for education and business but are uneasy about its potential to spread dissent, especially after social networking and other websites played a key role in protests that brought down governments in Egypt and Tunisia.

Beijing is in the midst of one of its most sweeping crackdowns on dissent in years and has detained or questioned hundreds of activists, lawyers and others.

The government tries to block access to foreign websites deemed subversive and Chinese operators of websites where the public can post comments are required to watch the material and remove any that violates censorship rules.

The government's censorship rules prompted Google Inc. to close its China search engine last year. Mainland users can see Google's Chinese-language search site in Hong Kong but access is slower and the company's China market share has shrunk.

The report on Liu's warning gave no details of how Internet companies were expected to change their management.

Employees who answered the phone at Sina referred questions to a spokeswoman who did not answer her phone.

With Liu during the visit were Sina CEO Charles Chao and Kai-fu Lee, a former boss of Google's China unit who runs a technology investment company, according to the Beijing Daily.

Chao told Forbes magazine in March that Sina's microblogging site, Weibo, has at least 100 employees monitoring content 24 hours a day. The company said in May that the number of Weibo users had passed 140 million.

Also this week, the Beijing Internet Media Association, a government-sanctioned industry group, called on its 104 member companies to police Internet content, possibly prompted by Liu's order.

"Propaganda guidance to the public should be led toward a correct direction," the appeal said, according to the Beijing Daily. "Online news should be trustworthy and should not spread rumors or vulgar contents."

Liu, the party secretary, also visited the headquarters of Youku.com Inc., a video portal, and talked with CEO Victor Koo, the report said.

China has the world's biggest online population, with 485 million Internet users as of June 30, according to the government-sanctioned China National Internet Information Center.

Meanwhile, a major Chinese Internet commerce platform, Taobao, has told merchants that use its service to stop selling virtual private network and other software that allows Web surfers to avoid government filters.

Taobao, part of Alibaba Group, said it acted after finding VPNs were being used to visit foreign websites illegally. A company spokesman said Tuesday it took the action on its own without receiving government orders.

Gold, Silver ETFs Tumble in Stock Rally - Buy Gold here, Check ...

Gold and silver exchange traded funds fell sharply Tuesday as a rebound in global risk appetite helped push the Dow Jones Industrial Average to a 322-point gain.

SPDR Gold Shares (NYSEArca: GLD) declined 3.8% while iShares Silver Trust (NYSEArca: SLV) dropped 4.7%.

ETFs that invest in gold and silver miner stocks also lost ground Tuesday along with precious metals prices.

Gold and silver ETFs slipped following reports that Swiss investment bank UBS boosted its price targets on the metals. UBS now sees gold prices hitting $2,100 an ounce in three months, while its price target on silver is $50 an ounce, according to a report from MarketWatch. However, UBS added ?some volatile price moves?both to the upside and the downside?lie ahead.?

Gold prices have been pushed back after a brief foray above $1,900 an ounce to fresh record highs.

Some analysts have been warning of a gold correction following the recent price spike. There are also fears of additional margin hikes from exchanges to trade gold futures.

Precious metals prices could be volatile the rest of the week as markets await a key speech on Friday from Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke.

`Jailhouse Rock' songwriter Leiber dead at 78 (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Jerry Leiber, who with longtime partner Mike Stoller wrote "Hound Dog," "Jailhouse Rock," "Yakety Yak" and other hit songs that came to define early rock `n' roll, died Monday. He was 78.

He was surrounded by family when he died unexpectedly of cardiopulmonary failure at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, said his longtime publicist, Bobbi Marcus.

With Leiber as lyricist and Stoller as composer, the team channeled their blues and jazz backgrounds into pop songs performed by such artists as Elvis Presley, Dion and the Belmonts, the Coasters, the Drifters and Ben E. King in a way that would help create a joyous new musical style.

From their breakout hit, blues great Big Mama Thornton's 1953 rendition of "Hound Dog," until their songwriting took a more serious turn in 1969 with Peggy Lee's recording of "Is That All There Is?" the pair remained one of the most successful teams in pop music history.

"He was my friend, my buddy, my writing partner for 61 years," Stoller said. "We met when we were 17 years old. He had a way with words. There was nobody better. I am going to miss him."

The two chronicled their lifelong partnership, which Leiber called "the longest running argument in show business," in their 2009 memoir, "Hound Dog: The Leiber & Stoller Autobiography." The pair's writing prowess and influence over the recording industry as pioneering independent producers earned them induction into the non-performer category of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.

"The music world lost today one of its greatest poet laureates," said Terry Stewart, president of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. "Jerry not only wrote the words that everyone was singing, he led the way in how we verbalized our feelings about the societal changes we were living with in post-World War II life. Appropriately, his vehicles of choice were the emerging populist musical genres of rhythm and blues and then rock and roll."

Recording Academy President Neil Portnow said Leiber and Stoller helped shape the music of the 1950s and `60s.

"Together, they were an extraordinary team that generated a rich and diverse musical catalog that leaves an indelible imprint on our cultural history," he said.

Leiber, who like Stoller was white, said his musical inspiration came from the close identification he had with black American culture during his boyhood and teen years in Baltimore and Los Angeles.

Thus he was the perfect lyricist for bluesy, jazz-inflected compositions like "Kansas City," "Black Denim Trousers and Motorcycle Boots," "Charlie Brown," "Drip Drop," "Stand By Me" and "On Broadway."

The lyrics could be poignant, as in "On Broadway," or full of humor, as in the antics of high school goofball Charlie Brown, who "calls the English teacher Daddy-O" and laments: "Why's everybody always pickin' on me?"

The result was a serious departure from the classically inflected music that had been produced by a previous generation of pop songwriters that included George Gershwin and Irving Berlin.

"Irving Berlin was the greatest songwriter of all time," Leiber told The Los Angeles Times' "West" magazine in 2006. "I was in awe of him. But his music wasn't my music. My music was the blues."

Over their career, they had 15 No. 1 hits in a variety of genres by 10 different artists. Among the performers who sang their songs were Barbra Streisand, Aretha Franklin, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Willie Nelson, Frank Sinatra, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor and Otis Redding.

Leiber and Stoller were instrumental in helping launch Presley's career with such songs as "Hound Dog" and "Jailhouse Rock." The two far preferred Thornton's version of "Hound Dog" to Presley's, in part because the latter version changed some of the lyrics.

"Lick for lick, there's no comparison between the Presley version and the Big Mama original," Leiber said in the pair's dual autobiography, "Hound Dog," published in 2009. Stoller said he was annoyed by the Presley version, but still praised the "edge of danger and mystery" that Presley brought to his covers of R&B records.

In the 1990s, their songs became the centerpiece of a long-running Broadway revue, "Smokey Joe's Cafe," which won a Grammy for best musical show album in 1996.

"The songwriting team of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller remains one of the greatest and most prolific partnerships of all time," said Martin N. Bandier, chairman and chief executive of Sony/ATV Music Publishing. "Like the lyrics in his iconic songs, Jerry was humorous, insightful and always memorable. He will be missed by everyone who knew him, but lucky for all of us his songs will live on for generations."

Their last song to reach wide acclaim was the 1969 ballad, "Is That All There Is?" Lee's moody rendition of the song, whose lyrics are based on an 1896 short story by German author Thomas Mann, reached the top 20.

Leiber and Stoller continued to collaborate on earnest, eclectic projects, including 1975's "Mirrors."

Leiber was born in Baltimore in 1933 to Jewish immigrants from Poland. He met Stoller after moving to Los Angeles with his mother in 1950.

The two immediately began collaborating and formed their own record label, Spark, in 1953.

The pair had grown tired of writing pop hits by the late 1960s, Leiber once said, and decided to concentrate on more serious music. Those later efforts never found the wide audience that their earlier work did, but Leiber said that was fine with him and his partner.

"The earlier market of swing and Frank Sinatra and Peggy Lee and Duke Ellington was pretty much gone, but we liked that kind of sound and wanted to imitate it," he told The New York Times in 1995. "In a way, we had helped kill it with what we had done. We had helped bring down the cathedral, and now we didn't know where to pray."

Leiber was survived by three children, Jed, Oliver, and Jake; and two grandchildren, Chloe and Daphne.

Skype Snaps Up GroupMe Pre-Microsoft (NewsFactor)

Skype is looking for ways to tap into text messaging. The company announced an agreement to acquire a New York-based provider of mobile group messaging services that helps users stay in touch and make decisions.

GroupMe, founded in 2010 at the TechCrunch Disrupt Hackathon, soon will become part of the Skype family, which itself soon will become part of Microsoft. Financial terms of the Skype-GroupMe deal were not disclosed.

"Skype and GroupMe have a shared vision of creating applications and experiences that are the daily communications choice for a billion people," said Skype CEO Tony Bates. "The GroupMe team has created an incredibly sticky group messaging experience that works across mobile devices and platforms, making this a perfect addition to the voice, video and text products in the Skype family."

Beyond Mobile Skype

The GroupMe acquisition brings Skype a number of assets, including group messaging, conference calling, location sharing and photo sharing -- along with compatibility for the iPhone, Android, BlackBerry and Windows Phone 7 smartphones.

GroupMe lets users start new groups with contacts already in their smartphone address book. When a user sends a message to the group, everyone in the group receives it, similar to email group capabilities. But, with additional features, the developers compare it to a private chat room that works on a smartphone.

For example, a conference call feature gives every group a unique phone number. Users can text that number, and the message goes to everyone in the group. If users call the number, it starts an instant conference call.

GroupMe also lets users share their location with people in their group, find out where friends are, and see them all on a map.

Finally, the photo sharing feature lets users capture group moments as they happen and share them within the conversation.

How It Began

"When we first started GroupMe, we set out to achieve two major goals," GroupMe execs wrote in a blog post.

"The first was to solve a very simple problem we had as individuals: How do we stay in touch and coordinate with our friends better in real-time? The second was a bit bigger: how can we change the way people across the globe communicate and get together better in real life?"

"We solved problem No. 1, and our efforts alongside Skype will accelerate the execution of problem No. 2 tenfold. This is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity."

'Curious Move'

Microsoft bid $8.5 billion to buy Skype in May, but the acquisition is not expected to close until October. For Skype to acquire an outside firm before completing the merger with Microsoft is a curious move, said Rob Enderle, principal analyst at The Enderle Group.

"Regardless of how interesting technology is, if Microsoft wanted the company, they would just buy it themselves. They don't need Skype to buy it for them," Enderle said.

"So the fact that they are doing this acquisition before the Skype deal closes could raise red flags," Enderle suggested.

"It's not an acquisition Skype should be making," Enderle said. "It's an acquisition that Microsoft, the acquiring company, should be making."

Indeed, there may be more to the story than meets the eye, and it will be interesting to watch what happens next in the Microsoft - Skype - GroupMe saga.
