Tweetbot for Mac beta is here. Sort of.

Tweetbot for Mac alpha expires, Tweetbot for Mac beta replaces it. Sort of.

The Tweetbot for Mac alpha is set to expire today. Tapbots has released a beta to replace it, but it comes with a huge, Twitter-policy forced, caveat: You can't add any previously un-added Twitter accounts to it. Developer Paul Haddad explains why on the Tapbots blog:

You can grab the Tweetbot for Mac Beta here. It?s important to realize that with this build you can?t add or reauthorize any accounts. If you delete an account or de-authorize an existing account you will not be able to add it again until the final version comes out.

If you try to add a new account or launch the app with no accounts created you are going to end up right here on this page.

So you can replace the Tweetbot for Mac alpha with the Tweetbot for Mac beta, but you can't add any accounts to it you haven't added already, or replace any you remove in the future (until the final version is released in the Mac App Store). The reason for all this hooha is, of course, and the reason Tapbots had to remove the alpha download previously, Twitter's new, developer-hostile API 1.1 rules which greatly restrict the amount of user tokens any 3rd party app can receive. Ever.

That also means if you tried Tweetbot for Mac alpha, and didn't like it, you should got to Twitter.com and revoke access to it, and any other Twitter app you're no longer using, so the developers can re-use those tokens for future users.

You can grab the new Tweetbot for Mac beta via the link below.

Kobo and American Booksellers Association bringing e-wares to indie bookstores

The e-book vs. real-book debate is very much a matter of opinion, so it's only fitting that the two learn to get along. Kobo and the American Booksellers Association seem to think so too, which is why they are teaming up to bring the Kobo's devices, accessories and virtual shelves to independent bookstores across America. Around 2,000 indie retailers are included in the plan, with the first 400 expected to get tooled and trained this fall. Although the stores will take a cut of Kobo's sales, we can't see any long-term benefits for them, but what do you make of the increasing physical presence of e-readers? Is it a move towards peaceful co-existence, or a case of "keep my enemy closer"?

NO POOCH PICS

For the reporters and editors shuffling into the Republican National Convention each day, security can feel like a maze of special regulations.

Those rules cover the security pooches as well, it turns out.

When I tried to take a picture of the friendliest-looking black lab wearing a police vest at the security checkpoint, her young handler took notice and said ? politely but sternly ? no pictures of dogs or anything else at the checkpoints.

Why? Because pictures are not allowed, he told me, so please delete it. Petting her was just fine, though.

I'd love to show the sweet doggie's photo, but it's no longer on my phone.

This Apple Bull Thinks Facebook Will Double

There?s no shortage of Facebook (Nasdaq: FB??) bears. Facebook bulls, on the other hand, are somewhat harder to come by. Well, that camp has one prominent analyst within its ranks that thinks investors should pick up some Facebook shares.

The Munster Mash
Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster is out with some bullish comments today. Of course, Munster is one of the most prominent and vocal Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL??) bulls in the universe, and has been pounding the table for years on end (don?t his hands hurt by now?) to invest in the Mac maker. For example, Bloomberg Businessweek ran a profile on the longtime Apple bull back in April, and compiled a graphic showing how Apple has performed relative to his price targets over the years.

?

Source: Bloomberg Businessweek.

Some of Munster?s product predictions haven?t panned out, such as when he said in 2009 that Apple would release an Apple TV by 2011. That was even before the first iPad was unveiled, and he was already talking TV. When it comes to the overall financial performance, though, Munster still has a respectable iTrack record.

The new apple of Munster?s eye
As bullish as Munster has been on Apple over the years, he?s now turning his attention to the dominant social network, and his sentiments echo those he felt about Apple in earlier times. He thinks Facebook?s future potential growth is monstrous relative to other large tech companies, and shares are now trading at a substantial discount.

One potential catalyst he predicts on the horizon is, potentially, the addition of a "want" feature, which would be similar to the site?s popular "like" button that has become a social phenomenon. A "want" could be used for the benefit of advertisers using Facebook?s Sponsored Stories push, which is one of its important moves towards mobile monetization.

Sponsored Stories are off to a strong start, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg saying on the last conference call that, at the end of June, they were up to a run rate of over $1 million in daily revenue, with half of that coming from mobile. Imagine a user seeing a Sponsored Story about a product that a friend just purchased, and instead of merely "liking" it with a click, they felt strong enough that they could click a "want" button. That?s a user that you can bet advertisers will pay top dollar to pitch to, and it?s a social angle that Google (Nasdaq: GOOG??) would have a hard time replicating, as its Google+ network still lags in users relative to Facebook?s.

Munster rates Facebook shares at "overweight," complete with a whopping $41 price target. To date, the only time Facebook has reached that high was when it briefly touched $45 on its IPO day, only to come crashing down. His target represents over 100% upside from current prices, so Munster is hoping for shares to double in the near future.

On the flip side, Munster acknowledges that Facebook has another lock-up expiration coming on November 15 that could add some selling pressure, as freshly released shares hit the market. Still, he doesn?t see any major long-term effects after the expiration.

Stop me if you?ve heard this one before
Back in June, he told CNBC that investors who were ?focusing too much on the near-term are "missing the whole point," but when looking at the long-term, it was a "no-brainer." Munster also believes Facebook will start playing a larger role in e-commerce, as it further taps its platform. He makes a strong case for opportunities in e-commerce and, if you believed him then, when shares were trading near $32, then today?s prices closer to $19 are a downright steal.

I?ve been keeping a close eye on Facebook, myself, and there are numerous reasons I?m bullish on its long-term prospect, I remain on the sidelines, however, until the valuation stars line up with its monetization abilities. Grab a copy of this premium report, where I break down Facebook?s monetization throughout the world, and look at what it would take before I?d consider it a buy.

HP's Spectre XT Touchsmart Has a Screen So Beautiful, You Can't Help But Touch It [Laptops]

The idea of a touchscreen shoehorned into a traditional laptop form factor still seems a bit strange, but like it or not, they're coming. And as such, HP's Spectre XT Touchsmart is a pretty good way of doing it if it has to be done. Instead of using some cheap display panel, the company opted for a 15.6-inch bonded IPS panel, ensuring a screen that's as responsive as it is vibrant. More »

Understanding The Procedure Of Breast Augmentation | Jackie's ...

If a woman is not pleased with her figure she may choose to remedy her problem by having a cosmetic procedure. Breast augmentation is one such procedure. Surgery of this type provides a way for women to increase their bust size and combat a poor self-image. While it is true that such procedures have assisted a high number of women to feel better about their physical appearance, they are not the best solution for all women.

There are advantages and disadvantages associated with all types of cosmetic surgery. For this reason, each individual must make her own decision about whether or not a specific procedure is a wise option. If a woman chooses to move forward with breast augmentation, she should select her cosmetic surgeon with care.

Breast augmentation involves the surgical placement of implants. The latter are placed underneath the woman?s natural breasts. The size one chooses is largely a matter of personal preference, although most cosmetic surgeons will make recommendations based on the woman?s frame.

The implants are manufactured from silicone or saline, although saline is the more common of the two substances. This is because it is considered the safest choice and offers the best results. However, both options are usually discussed at the woman?s initial consultation.

The implants are usually positioned under the woman?s chest muscle. However, in certain instances they are placed on top. This is another detail of the procedure that a woman should discuss with her doctor before scheduling the surgery. Certain cosmetic professionals will not place the implant above the muscle, as to do so sometimes results in post surgery complications but offers no additional cosmetic advantages.

Breast enhancement surgery is typically completed on an outpatient basis. Most of the time the woman can return home after a few hours of recovery time. However, if complications occur following the procedure, the patient may have to stay in the hospital for several nights. Recovery time is something that will vary significantly from one individual to the next. In most cases, however, a woman will find that she can resume her normal daily activities within three days of her procedure.

Selecting a plastic surgeon is not something that should be taken lightly. Most medical professionals recommend choosing a surgeon who specializes in breast augmentation. While most general plastic surgeons are familiar with the aforementioned procedure, numerous individuals find that they are more comfortable with surgeons who specialize. Additionally, it is always a good idea to carefully weigh the advantages and disadvantages of any cosmetic procedure before surgery is scheduled.

There never seems to be enough hours in the day to get everything done. Well, this year's laptop computers may be the answer to getting back a few of these valuable hours each week. A recent study showed that notebook computer users report an average of 10.8 hours each week of additional productivity over users of desktop computers. Those who travel frequently, reported almost 15 more, productive hours, weekly. Laptops increase productivity because they free the worker from network cables. Time once wasted commuting, waiting at airports or during those "can't sleep" hours at home, can now be a chance to stay in touch with customers, finish projects, check e-mail or share files. This year's lines of laptop computers can deliver most, if not more, of the power and benefits of desktop computer but in a portable package. The computers link effortlessly to wireless networks at the office, home and on the road.

Here are some tips to help you get the most out of your mobile computing solution. In The Office In the office, mobile computing has powered cooperation by enabling employees to stay connected to the office network while literally moving their laptops from office to conference room and back, all while the laptop remains linked through a wireless network to all the needed files. The new freedom from Ethernet cables gives workers an opportunity to share ideas and test solutions easily without having to re-establish network connections. In some offices, the concept of mobile computing has taken on new meaning as users literally take their laptops into a series of meetings in different locations, without ever missing a keystroke. Always On The GoFor the business traveler, wireless access is critical to staying connected. Many hotels and airports, coffee shops, bookstores and other places provide "hot spots" that let wireless users access the internet and transfer large files quickly via high-bandwidth connections. For those who want even more, flexible access, the latest notebooks offer mobile broadband capabilities that let users connect to the Web using cellular networks from major wireless service providers. Home At home, notebook users have the freedom to tap into the Internet or their office network conveniently, using an inexpensive wireless network that can link through the home's broadband connection. That means workers can access the Internet, their network folders and check e-mail while sipping a cup of coffee on the front porch or while making dinner in the kitchen. These wireless networks also help users share a single printer without manually linking to the printer cable. Advanced notebooks/laptops permit a growing number of electronic components-PCs, cell phones, GPS systems and others-to be synchronized using Bluetooth technology. (See last week's article http://www.plaintechtalk.com/blog for more information on Bluetooth technology, an inexpensive wireless system designed for use at close range.) This permits easy data transfers between devices. Wireless networking is an inexpensive and effective way for small businesses and home offices to maximize productivity.

Morocco dealt with Robert Kennedy Foundation in 'very civilized ...

Rabat, August 29, 2012 (MAP)

Foreign Minister Saad Eddine El Otmani said on Wednesday that Morocco dealt with the Robert Kennedy Foundation for Justice and Human Rights in a very civilized way, knowing that the said organization contests the Kingdom?s territorial integrity.

In an interview with ?Al Ittihad Al Ichtiraki? paper, the Minister hoped that the visit made by the Foundation members to Morocco and the Lahmada camps in Tindouf will enable them to notice the blatant abuses the camps populations are suffering from, adding that the majority of the Sahara population is attached to its moroccanness.

El Otmani highlighted the importance of the phone conversation between HM King Mohammed VI and UNSG Ban Ki-moon, considering it a tribute to Morocco?s role in supporting the UN and to its contribution to peacekeeping operations across the world and settlement of regional and international conflicts.

Pakistani officials confirm death of key militant

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? Pakistani intelligence officials confirmed Thursday that a U.S. drone strike last week near the Afghan border killed the son of the founder of the powerful Haqqani militant network, a major blow to one of the most feared groups fighting American troops in Afghanistan.

Badruddin Haqqani, who has been described as the organization's day-to-day operations commander, was killed on Aug. 24 in one of three strikes that hit militant hideouts in the Shawal Valley in Pakistan's North Waziristan tribal area, said two senior intelligence officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

The presence of the mostly Afghan Haqqani network in North Waziristan has been a major source of friction between Pakistan and the U.S. The Obama administration has repeatedly demanded Pakistan prevent the group from using its territory to launch attacks in Afghanistan, but Islamabad has refused ? a stance many analysts believe is driven by the country's strong historical ties to the Haqqani network's founder, Jalaluddin Haqqani.

The Pakistani intelligence officials didn't specify which strike on Aug. 24 killed Badruddin, but said he was leaving a hideout when the U.S. missiles hit. The confirmation of his death came from their sources within the Taliban, which is allied with the Haqqani network, and agents on the ground, they said. But neither the officials nor their sources have actually seen Badruddin's body.

Pakistani intelligence officials previously said they were 90 percent sure Badruddin was killed in a drone strike in a different part of North Waziristan on Aug. 21. It's unclear what caused the discrepancy.

Afghanistan's intelligence agency said several days ago that its operatives had confirmed Badruddin's death, but did not provide any details. A senior Taliban commander has also confirmed the militant's death.

A Taliban spokesman in Afghanistan, Zabiullah Mujahid, has however rejected reports of Badruddin's death, calling them "propaganda of the enemy."

The U.S. does not often comment publicly on the covert CIA drone program in Pakistan and has not said whether Badruddin was killed.

The areas where the American drone strikes generally occur are extremely remote and dangerous, making it difficult for reporters or others to verify a particular person's death.

Badruddin is considered a vital part of the Haqqani structure. He is believed to be the network's day-to-day operations commander, according to a report by the Institute for the Study of War.

The U.S. State Department has designated Badruddin, along with his father and brothers ? Nasiruddin and Sirajuddin ? as terrorists. The State Department said in May 2011 that Badruddin sits on the Miram Shah Shura, a group that controls all Haqqani network activities and coordinates attacks in southeastern Afghanistan.

Badruddin is also believed to have been responsible for the 2008 kidnapping of New York Times reporter David Rohde, the department said.

After their father effectively retired in 2005, Badruddin and his brother Sirajuddin expanded the network into kidnapping and extortion, both highly profitable for the organization, according to a recent report by the West Point, N.Y.-based Combating Terrorism Center. Afghan intelligence authorities have released intercepts of Badruddin orchestrating an attack against the Intercontinental Hotel in Kabul in 2011, the CTC said.

The U.S. has long viewed the Haqqani network as one of the biggest threats to U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan as well as the country's long term stability. The group has shown little interest in negotiating with the Washington, and has pulled off some of the highest-profile and most complex attacks in Afghanistan, although not necessarily the most deadly.

The Pakistani military has refused to target the Haqqani network, saying its troops are stretched too thin fighting militants at war with the state in other parts of the tribal region. But many analysts believe the military views the group as an important potential ally in Afghanistan after foreign forces withdraw. Pakistan worked closely with Badruddin's father, Jalaluddin, during the war against the Soviets in Afghanistan in the 1980s.

Also Thursday, gunmen shot to death a Shiite Muslim judge along with his bodyguard and driver in Quetta, the capital of southwestern Baluchistan province, said senior police official Wazir Khan Nasir. The police suspect it was a sectarian killing, he said.

Extremist Sunni Muslims have been killing Shiites with increasing frequency in Baluchistan and other parts of Pakistan.

Mexico's electoral court set to confirm Pena Nieto victory

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexico's electoral court is poised to confirm President-elect Enrique Pena Nieto's victory in the July 1 ballot, despite allegations of vote buying and money laundering during the campaign, electoral officials and legal experts said.

Leftist runner-up Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who lost the presidential election by 3.3 million votes, challenged the result, alleging that Pena Nieto's party used slush funds to buy votes and breached spending limits.

Lopez Obrador demanded that the electoral court void the result and the suit has left Mexico in political limbo for weeks, denying Pena Nieto a head start in building consensus on economic reforms in Congress, where his centrist Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) failed to win enough seats for an outright majority.

Electoral officials have told Reuters privately they do not expect Pena Nieto's win to be overturned.

The court has until September 6 to rule on Lopez Obrador's charges, although court workers say a decision could come as soon as this week before the new Congress convenes on Saturday.

Lopez Obrador has accused the PRI of buying some 5 million votes, and has publicly presented receipts and tax documents to allege that the PRI used shell companies to fund the fraud.

Urban voters were showered with supermarket gift cards and mobile phone minutes while rural voters were plied with presents of fertilizer, cement and livestock, Lopez Obrador said.

Pena Nieto, who is due to take office on December 1, has rejected the claims, which election experts say are nearly impossible to prove unless someone is caught in the act.

Showing that a party handed out gifts does not prove that they coerced voters into casting a ballot for them, they noted. Parties can distribute gifts as part of their propaganda.

Legal experts are adamant that Lopez Obrador, who also unsuccessfully challenged the result of the 2006 presidential election, which he lost by less than one percentage point, has failed to prove that irregularities occurred on a big enough scale to justify throwing out the result.

"The issue is if it altered the general will, and what we have here are isolated cases," said Jose Vargas, the former top prosecutor for electoral crimes in Mexico.

TURNOUT BOOST

The accusations revived memories of vote-rigging and corruption when the PRI ruled Mexico between 1929 and 2000. The PRI won a return to power partly thanks to higher support among the poor, who critics say are a soft target for vote-buying.

In the poorest towns of Chiapas, Mexico's most impoverished and southernmost state, the PRI's coalition partner, the Green Party, was accused of orchestrating the drive to buy votes.

In the poor mountain village of Santiago el Pinar, the Greens won the local elections held on July 1 even though they had never received a single vote there before.

"The night before the election, they came in offering people money. That is how they won," said Lorenzo Gomez, a local resident.

The Greens deny the accusations.

Turnout was unusually strong in Chiapas during the election, surging 18 percentage points from the 2006 contest. In Santiago el Pinar, 93 percent of registered locals took part in the vote, about 30 points higher than the nationwide figure.

Chiapas was among the states Lopez Obrador said had suffered the worst voter fraud by the PRI and its allies. But experts say he has not presented enough evidence to make his case stick.

"The evidence is really weak," said Luis Ugalde, who led the Federal Electoral Institute in 2006. He, like many analysts, say Lopez Obrador is trying to distract from the loss and defend his position as the leader of Mexico's political left.

LOW QUALITY DEMOCRACY

Still, analysts agree that the allegations underscore Mexico's slow political development, where few officials are convicted, or even face charges, in corruption scandals.

"We have a low-quality democracy," Ugalde said. "Political impunity continues to be the same as before."

President Felipe Calderon's National Action Party (PAN) has also said there were signs the PRI used suspect funds and bought votes, but it has not demanded that judges invalidate the election. Instead, they are calling for electoral reform.

Luis Alberto Villareal, the PAN leader in Mexico's lower house, said that his party would push legislation that would make breaking campaign spending limits grounds for annulling an election.

Both Lopez Obrador and the PAN have alleged the PRI spent between 4 billion and 5 billion pesos (around $300 million to $380 million) -- or about 13 times the legal limit -- on the presidential campaign.

Parties are often accused of securing funds via illegal private donations and siphoning funds from local governments. While the federal government has improved transparency, state and local finances remain opaque and corruption is widespread.

The problems are aggravated by weak legal provisions to prosecute alleged financial crimes, said Edgardo Buscaglia, an expert on money laundering at Columbia University in New York.

"Electoral violations are obscene (but) there is no institutional framework to detect before or after the election what is really going on," he said. "There is no way to find out, judicially speaking, where the money comes from."

The PRI was long dogged by accusations of vote-buying and corruption during its decades-long grip on power.

In 2000, officials were accused of funneling over $100 million from state oil firm Pemex to fund the PRI's unsuccessful presidential bid. Electoral authorities fined the PRI but prosecutors failed to convict officials linked to the crime.

Lopez Obrador's allies have been accused of using similar tactics. In 2004, a close aide of Lopez Obrador was caught on camera stuffing wads of cash into a suitcase.

Under current law, Lopez Obrador's charges of overspending are likely to only result in fines for the PRI, experts said.

Pena Nieto himself has sought to dispel doubts about his probity by pushing anti-corruption reform plans to the top of his agenda. He is promising to extend transparency laws to the state and local level after he takes office. ($1 = 13.1865 Mexican pesos)

Obama Recovery an 'Insult to Recoveries' Says McConnell

If Tuesday night at the Republican National Convention showcased many of the new faces of the Republican Party - including Mia Love, the Utah congressional candidate, and Ted Cruz, the Texas Senate candidate - today will bring some of the GOP old guard clearly into public view, featuring a slew of sitting senators and former members of the Bush administration.

But the old hands might bring fresh criticism of President Obama onto the stage. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, for instance, is the lead-off speaker during prime time today and will unleash a barrage of criticisms and one-liners on Obama, attacking what he sees as failed policies, according to excerpts obtained by ABC News.

"We're here this week for the simple reason that our nation is in desperate need of leadership," the 27-year Kentucky senator will say, according to the excerpt. "And we believe Mitt Romney is the man for the moment."

McConnell, 70, has been a thorn in the side of the White House. With few exceptions, he kept Republicans in the Senate united against the White House even when Democrats controlled the House and had a nearly filibuster-proof majority during the first two years of the Obama administration.

It was McConnell who famously said in 2010 that his party's singular focus would be to make Obama a one-term president.

"As we meet here tonight, America is suffering through an economic calamity of truly historic dimensions," McConnell will say. "Some are calling it the slowest recovery in our nation's entire 236-year history. To call this a recovery is an insult to recoveries."

The pointed speech will go on from there to criticize the president's penchant for playing golf on the weekend, a subject on which GOP Ohio Gov. John Kasich also touched Tuesday.

"For four years, Barack Obama has been running from the nation's problems," McConnell will say. "He hasn't been working to earn re-election. He's been working to earn a spot on the PGA tour."

And he'll make fun of a string of recent interviews the president has given to celebrity and entertainment magazines while avoiding the White House press corps.

"We know what the president's got on his iPod, but we don't know what he plans to do about a looming tax hike that could trigger yet another serious recession that would result in even more Americans losing their jobs. Ladies and Gentlemen: America cannot afford another four years of this."

Back on policy, McConnell, alluding to the "We built this" theme of the convention, will repeat his argument that the president has a sort of European socialism in mind for America.

"What this administration has in mind for America isn't a renewal, it's a great leveling out," he'll say, pointing to debt and entitlement problems in Europe.

"It wants the kind of government-imposed equality that in a single generation transformed Western Europe from a place where for centuries high achievement and discovery and innovation were celebrated and prized, to a place where they have elections about whether people should have to work. Where they make promises they can't keep and write checks they can't cash."

AirStrip adds mobile meaningful use tracker | mobihealthnews

AirStrip Meaningful Use TrackerJust a week after the ONC published the final version of Meaningful Use Stage 2 requirements, AirStrip Technologies announced a new addition to its mobile health platform ? a meaningful use tracker.

In June San Antonio-based AirStrip Technologies announced that it was expanding its suite of mobile patient monitoring applications to enable physicians to more easily access information housed in various electronic health record systems (EHRs) via their mobile devices via an acquisition of San Diego-based healthcare system Palomar Health?s EHR-agnostic and mobile-enabled MIAA (Medical Information Anytime Anywhere) platform. Because of increasing consolidation between organizations that own healthcare facilities and the fact that it is not unusual for the same healthcare system to have different EHR systems installed in its various facilities, the need for a mobile app that can access data from multiple records systems is crucial.

Similarly, keeping tabs on health IT systems utilizations among a healthcare organizations many facilities can prove to be a challenge, especially when multiple hospital information systems and EHRs are being used.

AirStrip acquired the software for its new meaningful use track from San Diego-based Care Automation, in a deal similar to the one it inked with Palomar: ?AirStrip owns the global licensing, marketing and distribution rights to the Meaningful Use Tracker, along with the ability to modify the solution to seamlessly integrate with the existing AirStrip platform,? the company wrote.

The company is now looking to pilot the technology and more news on that front should be coming in the weeks ahead.

More in the press release below:

PRESS RELEASE ? AirStrip Technologies, Inc. has announced an expansion of its leading mHealth platform to incorporate the Meaningful Use Tracker, giving clinicians the ability to follow and measure clinical quality and meaningful use (MU) compliance in a single mobile solution ? including real-time tracking and daily analytics updates in a customizable dashboard format.

?AirStrip is deploying measurement tools to run on top of our mobile patient monitoring solutions, providing our customers with the unprecedented ability to monitor their performance in real time,? AirStrip CEO Alan Portela stated. ?The Meaningful Use Tracker is the first in a series of advances and partnerships that AirStrip will announce in the near future as we expand our integrated, enterprise-level mobile platform to address the many challenges faced in an ever-changing healthcare landscape.?

Medicare and Medicaid EHR Incentive Programs provide healthcare institutions a financial motive for incorporating certified EHR technology to achieve health and efficiency goals. All certified EHR systems must have the ability to produce reports based on a set of required measures. However, if the EHR system is not utilized meaningfully, the benefits are in danger of being lost. Demonstrable MU compliance becomes more difficult when facilities are using a mix of different vendor systems or home-grown systems.

In addition, IT departments and CIOs are currently reviewing data that may be weeks or months old, delaying course corrections and potentially losing MU incentives.

The Meaningful Use Tracker can follow EHR usage for a single department or a multi-facility, multi-region health system with different EHR technology at each location. It is configured for future expansion to accommodate new stages of MU requirements and is the only vendor-neutral compliance tool on the market.

As part of an agreement between AirStrip and the Tracker?s developer, San Diego-based Care Automation, AirStrip owns the global licensing, marketing and distribution rights to the Meaningful Use Tracker, along with the ability to modify the solution to seamlessly integrate with the existing AirStrip platform. The process of identifying pilot sites is now underway.

?The Meaningful Use Tracker helps clinicians reach compliance and patient care goals while measuring success against their peers,? noted Care Automation CEO JF Lancelot. ?When coupled with the information already provided by AirStrip?s mobile medical monitoring solutions and EHR enhancer, analytics provided by the Tracker can support earlier warnings about compliance issues, to foster more informed responses to both internal benchmarks and overall patient needs.?

?AirStrip integrates and mobilizes data from the most important sources ? including existing monitoring systems, medical devices and EHR systems ? allowing that data to immediately be leveraged to impact outcomes improvements and enhance service lines while reducing costs,? Portela added. ?The Meaningful Use Tracker is a natural extension of AirStrip?s mission and goals.?

About AirStrip Technologies, Inc. Addressing the most pressing needs of a rapidly evolving global healthcare system, AirStrip develops mobile technology that can drive enhanced clinician engagement, strengthened care coordination and improved clinical and financial performance. By unlocking, transforming and mobilizing live and historical patient information from existing monitoring devices and EHR systems to access on mobile devices, AirStrip helps transcend the geographic and technological barriers that delay informed clinician action. The AirStrip platform supports an enterprise-wide solution with live and predictive analytics and unprecedented opportunities to improve the health of individuals and populations. You Can Build A Great Commercial Real Estate Business : Internet ...

If you?re not sure where to start the search for a commercial property, finding one that fits the needs of your business may be very difficult. Be sure to read this article to gain some insightful knowledge.

A large commercial property may be a better buy than a smaller one. If you were thinking of buying a building with five units, realize that it is no harder managing 50 units than five. You must get commercial financing for any commercial venture, whether 5 units or 50 or more. The more units you finance, the less cost per unit!

If you plan to finance your next commercial real estate purchase, you should first ensure that you can provide detailed financial statements for prospective lenders. If you don?t have these, banks won?t know how you manage your money, which might cause them not to lend the amount of money that you need.

If there is more then one property you are considering, acquire the house survey checklist for each one during your site tour. After you collect your first proposals from all the property owners, let them all know that you?re looking at other properties before you make your decision. There is nothing wrong with hinting that you have other properties in mind. It can also get you a great deal on the property you?re touring!

When thinking about financing for properties of a commercial nature, it is important to go over paperwork with a reputable real estate attorney. If the deal goes south for any reason, it?s important to have someone on your side that will fight tooth and nail to represent your interests.

Verify the terms that match your pro forma and the rent roll. Failing to review the terms might cause you to encounter a term not encompassed by the rent roll, thus resulting in changes to the pro forma.

Searching out larger commercial properties can help you in the long run, so keep an eye out for them. It?s not more work managing more units than less units, but each unit can cost less if you buy a property with more.

A variety of kinds of commercial property real estate brokers exist. So-called ?full service? brokers represent both tenants and landlords, while there are other brokers that work exclusively with tenants. Consider hiring a tenant-only broker as he?ll have the most experience in dealing with situations such as yours.

There are many ways available to cut down on repair costs when cleaning up the property. First off, you may not be liable for cleanup expenses if you do not hold ownership interest, but if you do, you are on the hook. Environmental clean up and waste disposal can end up costing you a lot of money. Get a report of the environment from a company that specializes in it. They cost a bit, but they can save you a lot.

There are many benefits to building a personal relationship with your area real estate brokers, lenders and other investors. Because properties may be sold without ever being listed, you increase your chances of becoming part of these opportunities if you have networked with the appropriate people.

The article you just read contains a lot of useful tips you can use when buying or selling commercial property. Take advantage of what you?ve learned, and continue to inform yourself about the commercial real estate

Low cost, high efficiency solar technology developed

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? Researchers at RTI International have developed a new solar technology that could make solar energy more affordable, and thus speed-up its market adoption.

The RTI solar cells are formed from solutions of semiconductor particles, known as colloidal quantum dots, and can have a power conversion efficiency that is competitive to traditional cells at a fraction of the cost.

Solar energy has the potential to be a renewable, carbon-neutral source of electricity but the high cost of photovoltaics -- the devices that convert sunlight into electricity -- has slowed widespread adoption of this resource.

The RTI-developed solar cells were created using low-cost materials and processing techniques that reduce the primary costs of photovoltaic production, including materials, capital infrastructure and energy associated with manufacturing.

Preliminary analysis of the material costs of the technology show that it can be produced for less than $20 per square meter -- as much as 75 percent less than traditional solar cells.

"Solar energy currently represents less than 1 percent of percent of the global energy supply, and substantial reductions in material and production costs of photovoltaics are necessary to increase the use of solar power," said Ethan Klem, a research scientist at RTI and co-principal investigator of the project. "This technology addresses each of the major cost drivers of photovoltaics and could go a long way in helping achieve that goal."

The technology was recently featured in a paper published in Applied Physics Letters.

In demonstration tests, the cells consistently provided a power conversion efficiency more than 5 percent, which is comparable to other emerging photovoltaic technologies.

"The efficiency of these devices is primarily limited by the amount of sunlight that is absorbed," said Jay Lewis, a senior research scientist at RTI and the project's other principal investigator. "There are many well-known techniques to enhance absorption, which suggests that the performance can increase substantially."

The cells, which are composed of lightweight, flexible layers, have the potential to be manufactured using high volume roll-to-roll processing and inexpensive coating processes, which reduces capital costs and increases production. Unlike traditional solar cells, the RTI-developed cells can be processed at room temperature, further reducing input energy requirements and cost.

In addition to being low-cost, the new cells have several other key benefits, including higher infrared sensitivity, which allows the cells to utilize more of the available solar spectrum for power generation.

Kepler discovers planetary system orbiting two suns

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? Astronomers at the International Astronomical Union meeting announced the discovery of the first transiting circumbinary multi-planet system: two planets orbiting around a pair of stars. The discovery shows that planetary systems can form and survive even in the chaotic environment around a binary star. And such planets can exist in the habitable zone of their stars.

"Each planet transits over the primary star, giving unambiguous evidence that the planets are real," said Jerome Orosz, Associate Professor of Astronomy at San Diego State University and lead author of the study which is published today in the journal Science.

The system, known as Kepler-47, contains a pair of stars whirling around each other every 7.5 days. One star is similar to the Sun while the other is a diminutive star only one third the size and 175 times fainter. The inner planet is only 3x larger in diameter than the Earth, making it the smallest known transiting circumbinary planet. It orbits the stellar pair every 49 days.

The outer planet is slightly larger than Uranus and orbits every 303 days, making it the longest-period transiting planet currently known. More importantly, its orbit puts it in the "habitable zone," the region around a star where a terrestrial planet could have liquid water on its surface. While the planet is probably a gas-giant planet and thus not suitable for life, its discovery establishes that circumbinary planets can, and do, exist in habitable zones.

Although much more difficult to detect than planets around single stars, the rich dynamics and wild climate changes make these circumbinary planets worth the effort to find. These two planets join the elite group of 4 previously known transiting circumbinary planets, Kepler-16, 34, 35 and 38.

The new planetary system is located roughly 5000 light-years away, in the constellation Cygnus. The planets are much too far away to see, so they were discovered by the drop in brightness they cause when they transit (eclipse) their host stars. The loss of light caused by the silhouette is tiny, only 0.08% for planet b and 0.2% for planet c. By comparison, Venus blocked about 0.1% of the Sun's surface during its recent transit. Precise photometric data from NASA's Kepler space telescope allowed the transits and eclipses to be measured, which in turn provided the relative sizes of the objects. Spectroscopic data from telescopes at McDonald Observatory in Texas enabled the absolute sizes to be determined. "Based on their radii, these probably have masses of approximately 8 and 20 times that of the Earth," Orosz said.

"Kepler-47 shows us that typical planetary architectures, with multiple planets in co-planar orbits, can form around two stars," said co-author Joshua Carter, a Hubble Fellow at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. "We've learned that circumbinary planets can be like the planets in our own Solar System, but with two suns."

The work was presented at the International Astronomical Union meeting by Dr. William Welsh, Professor of Astronomy at San Diego State University, on behalf of the Kepler Science Team.

"The thing I find most exciting," said Welsh, "is the potential for habitability in a circumbinary system. Kepler-47c is not likely to harbor life, but if it had large moons, those would be very interesting worlds."

Funding for this work was provided in part by NASA and the National Science Foundation.

Syrian army drops leaflets over Damascus

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian military helicopters dropped thousands of leaflets over Damascus and its suburbs Tuesday, urging rebels to hand over their weapons or face "inevitable death" as part of a widening and deadly offensive to recapture areas near the capital that have fallen into rebel hands.

The leaflets appear to be part of the regime's psychological warfare against the rebels, but are highly unlikely to have any effect on fighters intent on toppling President Bashar Assad's regime. Human rights groups say more than 20,000 people have been killed in Syria since the revolt against Assad began in March 2011.

The head of the main Syrian opposition group, the Syrian National Council, criticized U.S. officials for saying it was premature to speak about a provisional Syrian government.

Abdelbaset Sieda, speaking in a telephone interview with The Associated Press, said the opposition is making "serious" preparations and consultations to announce a transitional government, but admitted it is not imminent.

On Monday, French President Francoise Hollande called on the Syrian opposition to form a provisional government, saying France would recognize it. But Hollande's statement, believed to be the first of its kind, was quickly shot down by U.S. officials who said it was premature to speak about a provisional government when Syria's fractured opposition hasn't even agreed yet on a transition plan.

The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak publicly on the matter, cited persistent disagreements among the Syrian National Council and rival opposition groups, and between Syrian opposition figures campaigning outside the country and rebels fighting the Assad regime on the front line.

"We're nowhere near that yet," one U.S. official said.

Sieda said the U.S. comments show the international community was not ready not ready" to take decisive decisions when it comes to Syria.

"It seems to me as if the international community is not prepared to take decisive decisions and blames the Syrian opposition for its own shortcomings," Sieda said.

"Yes there are differences within the Syrian opposition and this is normal in any country, but as long as we are agreed on a common vision, these differences can be overcome," he added.

"The international international community must make a move before it's too late."

Syria's opposition has been plagued by divisions and infighting since the start of the uprising last year, and forming a transitional government is fraught with difficulties.

In addition to the SNC, several other opposition groups are known to be making similar plans, including a new opposition alliance headed by veteran opposition figure Haitham Maleh.

Sieda said his group has been contacting other opposition figures and the Free Syrian Army rebels to consult over a transitional government, but admits they have not started discussing names yet.

For more than a month, the military has been fighting major battles against rebels in the outskirts of Damascus and its suburbs while engaged in what appears to be a stalemated fight in the north against rebels for control of Aleppo, the nation's largest city and commercial capital.

The government recently has intensified its offensive to recapture rebellious districts on the capital's periphery, and hundreds of people have been killed in several days of shelling and clashes in the affected areas. Over the weekend evidence mounted of mass killings by regime forces in the Damascus suburb of Daraya after it was stormed by troops.

Some of the leaflets dropped Tuesday, which were signed by the armed forces and the army's general command, read: "The Syrian army is determined to cleanse every inch in Syria and you have only two choices: Abandon your weapons ... or face inevitable death."

"No one will help you. They have implicated you in taking up arms against your compatriots," they said. "They drown in their pleasures while you face death. Why? And for whom?"

Syrian authorities blame the 17-month uprising on a foreign conspiracy and accuse oil-rich Gulf countries Saudi Arabia and Qatar, in addition to the U.S. and Turkey, of backing "terrorists" seeking to oust the regime.

Assad told an Iranian delegation this week that he was determined to crush the conspiracy against Syria "whatever the price."

With its forces stretched thin by fighting on multiple fronts, Assad's regime has increasingly turned to air power, unleashing both helicopters and fighter jets on the rebels.

The lightly armed fighters, in turn, have grown bolder and their tactics more sophisticated in recent months. Rebels claimed to have shot down a military helicopter that crashed in flames in the Damascus district of al-Qaboun Monday. State media confirmed the crash but gave no details about the cause.

FDA asks Genzyme to redo Lemtrada marketing application

PARIS (Reuters) ? The U.S. health regulator has asked Sanofi?s rare disease division Genzyme to redo the filing of its marketing application for multiple sclerosis drug candidate Lemtrada, Genzyme said, though no additional clinical studies are needed.

Genzyme said on Monday it had received a so-called Refuse to File letter from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), asking the company to change the presentation of the data so the agency can ?better navigate the application?.

The FDA has not requested additional data or further studies, Genzyme said in a statement, adding it was confident it could resubmit the application as soon as possible.

The drug, chemically known as alemtuzumab, is also used under a different dosage to treat leukemia or blood cancer but Genzyme said last week it was pulling that version, branded as Campath, to prepare for the launch of Lemtrada.

Lemtrada could be launched in 2013 if it wins approval and will be given far less frequently and in lower doses than Campath. The withdrawal will enable Sanofi to adjust Lemtrada?s price closer to that of rival multiple sclerosis drugs such as Novartis?s Gilenya.

Sanofi, which has worked on the drug with Germany?s Bayer, submitted a supplemental biologics license application to the FDA and a marketing authorization application to the European Medicines Agency for Lemtrada in June.

Finally, A (Questionable) Anti-Radiation Cell Phone Case | Geekologie

August 27, 2012 / brain, case, cell phone, dome, head, iffy, phones, protection, questionable, radiation, safety first, safety last, skull, sure why not, the more radiation the better that's why i say (i reaaaaally want to become a superhero!), whatever, ya best protect ya neck, you're cooking my meat!

anti-radiation-phone-case.jpg

Tired of nuking your brain with cell phone radiation? ME NEITHER. I can't get enough of that stuff. I think it's because I used to rest my head on the microwave when I was cooking Hot Pockets growing up. But for those of you who care, Pong is selling a line of cases for popular phone models that allegedly redirect up to 95% of radiation AWAY from your dome and at the same time boost signal strength. I'm skeptical. Skeptical, and handsome as a show horse.

Each Pong case is custom built for the phone it fits, and complements the structure and antenna placement of that model. Unlike antenna shields that purport to contain EMR (and which can diminish or block altogether a phone's signal), Pong redirects EMR away from the user's head and body. This has been confirmed in laboratories certified by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the US government body which regulates the telecommunications industry.

Mobile phone antennas emit microwave radiation (low frequency EMR similar to that radiated by a microwave oven) when they send data to, and receive date from, mobile phone towers. Mobile phone antennas transmit in a 360 degree circular pattern of energy that radiates around the phone itself. Though not widely acknowledged, peer reviewed studies demonstrate that when the user places a phone next to the head, between 48% and 68% of the phone's radiated power is absorbed directly into the user's head and body and, therefore, is lost for transmission.

I'm gonna be honest, I don't use phone cases. Sure my screen is perpetually shattered, but you know what? I LIVE DANGEROUSLY. Live hard, die young, leave a mangled f***ing cell phone -- that's what I say. The last time I broke my phone was when the pizza guy called to tell me he was outside and I got so excited MY PHONE HIT THE CEILING. Actual pic of the damage HERE. I...am a wreck.

Hit the jump for a video from Pong explaining the thing.

Thanks to V, who agrees there's no point in investing in an anti-radiation cell phone case if you're still gonna text and drive.
