Kenny Baillie announced as new CEO of London Scottish

Kenny Baillie, the former Chief Executive of Glasgow Warriors, has been appointed as the new CEO of London Scottish International Ltd.

The 37-year-old Scot will take up his position on the 1st March 2013 and is tasked with heading up the rugby club's plans to develop its position in the RFU Championship.

Speaking about his appointment, Baillie said, "Many great players have worn the London Scottish jersey with distinction and it is a privilege and an honour to take over as CEO at this important time in the Club's history."

"London Scottish is known throughout the world of rugby and I am looking forward to working with the Board, the management team, the coaches, the players and everyone who supports London Scottish to help the Club reach its potential."

"On a personal note, as a Scot living in London who is passionate about rugby, I believe London Scottish plays an important role within the wider rugby community and I am delighted to have the chance to play a major role in growing the Club. I firmly believe London Scottish can continue to provide Scottish-qualified players for all Scotland's representative teams while developing rugby in the local Richmond community and the south of England generally."

Baillie, a former Scotland Under 21 and senior Glasgow District player, was the youngest CEO in British and European rugby when he was appointed CEO of Glasgow Warriors. During his tenure he oversaw the professional team reaching the inaugural Magners League play-offs in 2010 and played a key role in the relocation of the club from Firhill Stadium to its new state-of-the art facilities at Scotstoun Stadium.

For the last 12 months, Baillie has been working in retail marketing and sponsorship where his clients have been major blue chip companies and he previously had a successful career in IT both in the UK and USA.

Sir David Reid, Chairman of London Scottish, said, "We are delighted to have Kenny on board to see us through the next phase in the club's development. He brings a wealth of relevant experience and great personal energy. We look forward to him delivering the same impact at London Scottish that he achieved in his very successful time at Glasgow."

Baillie succeeds Tony Copsey, who takes up the CEO role at London Welsh on 1st January 2013. London Scottish Club President Rod Lynch will take the reins as Interim CEO until Kenny takes over on 1st March.

Facebook shuts down news site over Gandhi quote

(NaturalNews) The reports are absolutely true. Facebook suspended the Natural News account earlier today after we posted an historical quote from Mohandas Gandhi. The quote reads:

?Among the many misdeeds of British rule in India, history will look upon the Act depriving a whole nation of arms as the blackest.? ? Mohandas Gandhi, an Autobiography, page 446.

This historical quote was apparently too much for Facebook?s censors to bear. They suspended our account and gave us a ?final warning? that one more violation of their so-called ?community guidelines? would result in our account being permanently deactivated.

They then demanded we send them a color copy of a ?government issued identification? in order to reactivate our account.

Hopes for Syria breakthrough faint as U.N. envoy visits Russia

MOSCOW (Reuters) - The international mediator seeking to end the 21-month-old conflict in Syria met Russia's foreign minister in Moscow on Saturday after talks in Damascus but expectations of progress toward a negotiated solution were low.

U.N.-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi's talks with Sergei Lavrov occurred a day after the main Syrian opposition group rebuffed diplomatic advances by Russia and firmly reiterated it would not negotiate with President Bashar al-Assad's government.

Brahimi is trying to build on an agreement reached in Geneva in June by world powers, including the United States and Russia, that called for the creation of a transitional government but left Assad's role unclear.

The mediator, who met Assad and others on a five-day trip to Syria, is to meet together with senior U.S. and Russian diplomats in the coming weeks, after two such meetings this month that produced no signs of a breakthrough.

In Damascus on Thursday, Brahimi called for a transitional government to rule until elections in Syria and said only substantial change would meet demands of ordinary Syrians, but did not specify who could be part of the transitional body.

Russia has vocally supported Brahimi's efforts while refusing to join Western and Arab calls for Assad's exit, as it has throughout a conflict that has killed 44,000 people since protests in March 2011 elicited a fierce government crackdown.

Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Makdad discussed Brahimi's proposals with Lavrov in Moscow on Thursday.

Lavrov on Friday urged the government and opposition to start a dialogue, and Russia said it had invited the leader of the National Coalition opposition group to meet Russian officials in Moscow or elsewhere for the first time.

The invitation and calls for dialogue were among signs that with the rebels advancing steadily over the second half of 2012, Russia may be reaching harder for a diplomatic solution than it did when it was more confident Assad could hold out.

But coalition leader Moaz Alkhatib said he had ruled out a trip to Moscow and suggested he would only meet Russian officials if Moscow condemned the Syrian government's actions and clearly called for Assad to step down.

An opposition spokesman said separately on Friday the coalition "will not negotiate with the Assad regime", also underscoring the uphill struggle Brahimi faces.

Russia, together with China, has angered the West and some Arab states by vetoing three U.N. Security Council resolutions meant to put pressure on Assad, who has given Moscow one of its firmest post-Soviet footholds in the Middle East.

President Vladimir Putin has said Russia is not trying to prop up Assad, contending that its vetoes and opposition to U.N. sanctions are driven by the principle of non-interference in sovereign states.

Russia has warned it will not allow a repeat in Syria of last year's events in Libya, where NATO intervention, authorized by the U.N. Security Council after Russia abstained from a vote, helped rebels topple Muammar Gaddafi.

Mike Hussey to retire from Test cricket | The Roar

Mike Hussey reacts after being dismissed first ball during first innings of Boxing Day Test between Australia and India at the MCG in Melbourne, Monday, Dec 26, 2011.(AAP Image/Julian Smith).

Mike Hussey is quitting international cricket at the end of the summer and says the final straw was the realisation that a long Test tour of India no longer excited him.

The 37-year-old father-of-four is turning his back on next year?s Ashes tour and says next week?s third Test against Sri Lanka will be his final match in the baggy green.

He?ll play out the rest of the summer in national colours in one-dayers and Twenty20 clashes with Sri Lanka and West Indies before going back to state level with Western Australia.

Hussey made the shock announcement to Test captain Michael Clarke and national coach Mickey Arthur before they sprayed beer all over each other at the MCG on Friday night to celebrate taking a 2-0 lead in the three-match series against Sri Lanka.

In 78 Tests, Hussey has scored 6183 runs ? the 12th most by an Australian ? at an average of 51.52.

The scorer of 19 Test hundreds spent his Saturday contacting Test teammates by phone to tell them of the news before publicly revealing his decision.

Hussey?s recent form has been excellent and he?s averaging 180.00 after two Tests in the current series against Sri Lanka.

Hussey says he felt at the start of this summer that closing time was rapidly approaching.

?I know I?m making the right decision,? Hussey told AAP.

?I?m quite lucky to go out on my terms. Not too many people get to do that.

?The clincher for me was when when I started looking ahead to the Indian and Ashes series ? I didn?t have the excitement and buzz about facing the challenges of those two tours that I felt like I should have.

?So for me that meant that I was making the right decision. They?re two tough tours where you?re away from home a long time.

?You need to be really a hundred per cent committed to the challenges.

?The last two away trips have been pretty brutal. One was for three-and-a-half months and we found that really tough at both ends.

?The last trip was about two-and-a-half months and we found that extremely tough as well.

?The next one I think I would?ve been away for seven months of the year, it?s just too much. It?s not something I really want to do at all.?

Hussey said his wife Amy had been amazingly supportive throughout his cricket journey.

He said a fairytale Ashes finale would have been nice.

?But if you don?t quite have that heart to want to do it, then I think I?d only be selling myself and the team short,? he said.

Dubbed `Mr Cricket?, Hussey said he felt he could approach the Sydney Test without any pressure and just enjoy the experience.

His retirement will follow the departure last month of ex-skipper Ricky Ponting, Australia?s all-time leading runscorer.

Auto sales look good for '13, but for the 'cliff'

14 hrs.

It?s been a disappointing holiday season for many?retailers, but U.S. car dealers have been busily ringing up sales?as the year wraps up.

If preliminary numbers for December hold up, 2012 could prove to be the industry?s best year since the long recession and painfully weak recovery began. And 2013 is?shaping up to be even better ? unless auto sales fall off the fiscal cliff. ?

?I clearly hope we get some bipartisan effort to avoid the fiscal cliff,? said Ford Motor Co. Chairman Bill Ford Jr. ?It?s vitally important for the economy that we work this out.?

That's true for the auto industry, in particular. After nearly half a decade of struggles, carmakers are ending 2012 on a positive note. November saw demand for new cars, trucks and crossovers surge at a double-digit pace. In fact, a number of makers including Audi, BMW, Honda, Nissan and Porsche are setting all-time sales records for the month. By the end of November, Hyundai had already beaten its previous full-year record set in 2011.

December, meanwhile, is expected to see another gain of around 15 percent, year-over-year, according to a forecast by LMC Automotive. The consulting firm has now upped its final forecast for all of 2012 to 14.5 million and conservatively anticipates another comfortable jump next year.

?The U.S. light-vehicle sales market continues to be a bright spot in the tremulous global environment,? said Jeff Schuster, LMC?s senior vice president of forecasting.? ?The only major roadblock ahead for the U.S. market is the fiscal cliff. Assuming that hurdle is cleared, 2013 is one step closer to a stable and sustainable growth rate for autos, with volume above the 15 million unit mark.?

Barring that setback, analysts anticipate a steady shift in the sort of vehicles Americans have been buying.?

The upcoming North American International Auto Show will feature an assortment of new products, and the debut of the all-new 2014 Chevrolet Corvette and Chevy?s next-generation Silverado pickup are likely to be two of the star attractions. But the floor of Detroit?s Cobo Center will be covered with a variety of downsized models, including Honda?s pint-sized Urban SUV Concept and the new Lincoln MKC compact luxury crossover.

Ford's?B- and C-segment models ? subcompacts like the updated 2013 Fiesta and compacts???have jumped from 13 percent?of the overall U.S. market to 24 percent since 2004, according to Mark Fields,?Ford?s chief operating officer.?And the trend is expected to continue at an even faster pace going forward.

If anything, Americans are downsizing powertrains at an even more rapid rate, trading in V-6s for inline-fours and even abandoning traditional V-8s for high-tech turbo V-6s. Six-cylinder engines now account for more than half of the demand in Ford?s big F-Series pickups, Fields said.

While demand for smaller models is soaring, sales of some traditional American vehicles have remained strong ? pickups in particular. Credit the strong upturn in the housing market in recent months, said Mark Reuss, president of North American operations at General Motors.?

While the so-called ?personal use? segment has largely dried up, there?s significant pent-up demand among contractors and other professional for pickups and other full-size trucks, something Detroit?s Big Three hope to use to their advantage as they continue to hold off import competitors like Nissan and Toyota.

Pent-up demand is likely to float all boats, says analyst Joe Phillippi, from the largest to the smallest market segments. It helps, he adds, that automotive interest rates are at or near historic lows.

On the downside, makers have been cutting back incentives as demand outstrips supply, especially of more popular models like the Hyundai Elantra and the new Honda Accord. There are still bargains to be had on slower-selling models, but research by TrueCar.com reveals that incentives have slipped to their lowest levels in several years even as transaction prices ? the price customers actually pay ? have risen to near-record levels.

And that is likely to translate into record industry earnings, at least in North America. Ironically, the market is running counter to trends in much of the rest of the world. European car sales have been in freefall all year, and without a clear resolution of the Continent?s economic crisis, few see any short-term solution.? Even China, which has seen annual growth rates approaching 100 percent over the past decade, has started to stumble.

So, makers from around the world are once again looking to the U.S. to carry the load. The good news is that ?the forecast ahead looks even better,? Toyota?s top U.S. executive, Jim Lentz, recently said, adding that ?analysts expect we will reach 16 million in just a few short years.?

That?s still well short of the U.S. all-time record of 17.5 million vehicles sold in 2005, but it?s still a welcome turnaround from the disastrous slump the industry has only just left behind.

Don't Fall Victim to Keyloggers: Use These Important Anti-Keylogger ...

anti-keylogger softwareIn cases of online identity theft, keyloggers play one of the most important roles in the actual act of stealing. If you?ve ever had an online account stolen from you ? whether it was for Facebook, Gmail, a forum, or a video game ? and you couldn?t explain how it was stolen, then the likely explanation is a keylogger. They?re dangerous, and no one is safe from them.

What exactly is a keylogger? Forgive me for using the term in the definition, but it?s a malicious infection that resides on your computer,?logging?a record of your keys?as you press them. It saves every key pressed on your keyboard then sends that information back to a home server somewhere. A hacker then uses this information to break into your personal accounts and dig through your information.

Types of Keyloggers

When it comes to keyloggers, there are two categories that you need to know ? software and hardware.

A software keylogger is a malicious program that resides entirely within your computer. They run in the background, invisible to the average user?s knowledge, and everything is done through the operating system. For the most part, these programs will record keystrokes into a file, then send that file back to the hacker at regular intervals, which requires Internet access.

A hardware keylogger is an actual physical device that plugs into your computer, most likely through a USB port. These type of keyloggers are entirely self-contained and will record the keypresses to internal memory without ever installing any software to the computer. This makes it harder for a user to detect, though obviously the jig is up if they ever?see?the device.

The anti-keylogger software in this article will only protect against software-based keylogger threats. The thing about hardware keyloggers is that the hacker must physically get it hooked into your system, which is quite difficult if you aren?t Jason Bourne. Still, if you absolutely want to be sure, you can check your computer inputs every once in a while to check that no hardware keyloggers are present.

anti-keylogger software

If all you need is an anti-keylogger, Zemana?s AntiLogger Free will suffice. As far as features go, the Free version won?t give you much of anything. All it has is a system-wide keylogger guard that encrypts each individual keystroke at the system level. This way, even if your information is sent back to a hacker, it?ll be jumbled and unreadable.

For $29.95, you can upgrade to the Full version of Zemana AntiLogger. In addition to the keylogger guard, you?ll get features like malware alerts, protection against financial malware, and cloud-powered protection against malware when it tries to install itself onto your system.

Having used Zemana for a bit, I was surprised by how out-of-the-way it was. It sat in the system tray and never once bothered me. It will notify you when you run a program that Zemana is not compatible with, which may include programs like video games and the like. There is an option in the settings to enable ?Zemana promotions? but I disabled that, so I didn?t experience any unwanted advertisements.

Note: This is the only program on this list where the free version will work on 64-bit systems.

anti-keylogger free

SpyShelter?s software is a little more advanced than Zemana. In the Free version, not only do you get a keylogger guard, but also a screen capture guard and a clipboard guard. STOP-LOGGER sits in the background and defends against malware that tries to steal this information from under your nose.

For ?24.95, you can purchase the Premium version, which comes with a webcam guard, audio guard, network guard, and support for 64-bit systems. (Sadly, yes, the Free version is only for 32-bit systems.) For ?29.95, you can get the Firewall version, which is like the Premium except it comes with a built-in firewall.

To be honest, I?m quite impressed with SpyShelter STOP-LOGGER. It sits in the background, does not hog up too many resources, only sends out notifications when necessary, but most of all, it?s extremely transparent. It has a log window that tracks every one of its actions; it tells you exactly which programs are being protected and which are not; and it?s very customizable in how it deals with the potential threats encountered.

My only gripe is that the Free version doesn?t work for 64-bit systems, which is almost a shot in the foot considering how most computers these days are moving towards a 64-bit architecture.

anti-keylogger software

NextGen AntiKeylogger is easy-to-use anti-keylogger software that doesn?t use an anti-virus database for its protection method, which means less system resources required in its use. It provides against keystroke logging by working at the system level, encrypting keystrokes on-the-fly and injecting them straight into applications so that hackers can?t steal what you?re typing.

As effective as NextGen AntiKeylogger is, it does have its downsides. Because of the way it works, the Free version only works with IE, Firefox, and Safari. The Pro version ($25) expands to other browsers, instant messengers, email clients, etc. for a total of 75 protected programs. The Ultimate version ($39) expands to a total of 108 protected programs.

It?s a shame that the Free version only protects IE, Firefox, and Safari, but despite its limited reach, it does do a fine job of protection. It even has the option to display an overlay that shows you its real-time encryption of your keypresses. Unfortunately, if you don?t use IE, Firefox, or Safari as your main browser, then you?ll find little value here.

Conclusion

The cold and honest truth, however, is that preventative software will never catch 100% of keylogger cases. Hackers are constantly creating new keyloggers and new malware to infest computers all over the globe. Protective software will always be playing a game of ?catch up?.

So if you want to maximize your safety, be sure to read Matt?s article on 4 ways to protect yourself against keyloggers.

Malware is annoying, but keyloggers can destroy lives. You don?t want your credit card information stolen. You don?t want your emails hacked into. You don?t want hackers to gain access to your personal information. Therefore, protect yourself if you aren?t already. Keyloggers are serious business!

Dot Earth: Peabody Coal Sales Ticker Next to 'Clean Energy' Claim

Dec. 29, 12:38 a.m. | Updated below |Electricity, including that generated by coal combustion, has been a boon for humanity. In fact, there?s much truth in the headline on Indur M. Just to the right of a ticker-style, real-time tally of tons of coal sold (about eight tons per second or so) is the message that the company is the* ?global leader in clean energy solutions??

Pollution from coal burning, in the United States and particularly in developing countries, has big impacts on public health, and the climate impact from coal-generated carbon dioxide could be enormous if the world?s still-vast reserves are heavily exploited. We?ve been stuck on the coal rung of what Loren Eiseley called ?the heat ladder? of energy history for too long.

I sent a site link and the video clip above to Nicholas Muller of Middlebury College and William D. Nordhaus and Robert O. Mendelsohn of Yale, authors of this influential 2011 paper in American Economics Review: ?Environmental Accounting for Pollution in the United States Economy.? One of its many conclusions was that ?coal-fired power plants have air pollution damages larger than their value added.?

As I put it in my note to them, ?I find it hard to reconcile your calculation of coal?s big externalized costs with such a juxtaposition (coal sales and ?clean energy? leadership):

You can read the reply from Mendelsohn below, followed by more from Bob Keefe of the Natural Resources Defense Council and Vic Svec, a spokesman for Peabody Energy:

Here?s Mendelsohn:

We did not make any company specific estimates of damage. If Peabody is responsible for 23 percent of U.S. coal and if each ton of Peabody coal causes the average damage from coal in the U.S., the burning of Peabody coal is causing $12 billion of damage from traditional health related air pollutants and almost $16 billion of damage including greenhouse gases every year. Few companies can boast more.

I also asked him if they?d gotten any significant pushback on their findings so far. Here?s his reply:

Academically, there has been nothing but positive feedback so far. Politically, so far, there is no push back. However, if there was ever a hint of legislation based on our work, I am sure that it would heat up considerably.

I sent the same query to Bob Keefe, a spokesman for the Natural Resources Defense Council. He put his reaction bluntly:

Juxtaposing its coal sales against its shamefully blatantly false claims of being ?a global leader in clean energy solutions? is baffling ? but also indicative of Peabody Energy?s inexplicable approach to the environment and the communities in which it operates.

The only way you could possibly believe Peabody?s claim that it ?advances environmental excellence? is if you believe breathing pollution and toxins is part of a good health routine.

Peabody consistently ranks as one of the worst polluters on the planet. If it put only a fraction of the time and money it spends on fighting environmental safeguards into actually pursing clean energy solutions, we?d all be better off.

Finally, here?s the response from Vic Svec from Peabody:

We note on the front page of our website that Peabody Energy is the world?s largest private-sector coal company and a global leader in sustainable mining and clean coal solutions. One of the great untold environmental stories is the enormous progress in clean energy that has occurred in recent decades.

We forget to celebrate the enormous progress that has been made in clean coal in recent decades. The core U.S. coal statistic is this: criteria emissions from coal use in the U.S. have declined a stunning 87% since 1970, during a time when coal use has nearly tripled. ?Smokestacks? for coal plants have now become steam stacks, thanks to wet and dry ESPs, baghouses, low-NOx burners, SCRs, activated carbon injection and a host of other technologies.

In addition, using coal in large centralized plants dramatically reduces the burning of fuel wood and waste that causes enormous indoor air pollution in developing nations. And we know that low-cost coal-fueled electricity has helped to bring about an explosion of electrotechnologies: your coal-fueled mail delivery ? e-mail ? has dramatically lower emissions than traditional mail.

New supercritical coal plants represent another leap forward. Consider the Prairie State Energy Campus, with more than $1 billion in clean coal technologies and criteria emissions some 80% below the existing coal fleet? along with a carbon dioxide emission rate some 40% below existing plants. Prairie State is also a great example of green jobs, with thousands of workers involved in construction of the large coal plant. And Prairie State has a cost of fuel that less than one-third that of even currently suppressed U.S. natural gas prices.

Ironically, U.S. environmentalists have been a major reason more supercritical coal plants haven?t been used in the United States, even taking credit for killing state-of-the-art new coal construction in the past decade. China is building far more such plants because they recognize that coal is essential to power a healthy economy and the new generation of coal plants offer great environmental advantage. Also, Peabody is proud to be the only non-Chinese partner in GreenGen, which just started up in Tianjin, China, as a major coal gasification plant that will ultimately reuse carbon dioxide for enhanced oil recovery.

Coal has been the fastest growing fuel in the world for the past decade, and has been projected to pass oil as the world?s largest energy source next year. Its abundance and low-cost profile make coal essential for powering the world?s best economies and helping to move hundreds of millions of people to cities? and to the middle class. Those are enormous societal benefits, and technology can ensure that his be done in an environmentally friendly way.

* There?ve been several interesting developments related to the section marked with an asterisk:

1) In a comment, Peter Gleick noted that, while I wrote that the company said it is a global leader in clean energy solutions, it actually stated on its home page that it is ?the global leader in clean energy solutions.? I?ve changed the text from ?a? to ?the.?

2) Another commenter, Bob Armstrong, protested, quoting from the Web site as follows:

No , it says: ?Peabody Energy is the global leader in CLEAN COAL solutions and advances environmental excellence in coal mining and use.?

It turns out they?re both right, in that it said what Gleick asserted when I recorded my video loop of the page on Dec. 19 and now says what Armstrong quoted.

I?ll ask Vic Svec why the wording changed. Perhaps the first version was not supported by the facts?

Audiogalaxy music app will shut down services entirely January 31st as its team joins Dropbox

When music streaming app Audiogalaxy announced its acquisition by Dropbox earlier this month and closed signups we feared the worst, and now it's been confirmed: the service is shutting down entirely on January 31st, 2013. It had previously announced subscribers would have access to their mixes until the end of this month, but after another month they'll have to move to a service like Google Play Music, or possibly self hosting with Subsonic or something similar. The original blog post mentioned a desire to bring "great new experiences" to Dropbox's 100 million plus users so we may see some of those features again, soon. As for the service itself, Founder Michael Merhej relaunched it just over two years ago after version 1.0 -- a web-based music file sharing service that eclipsed its competitors during its run from 1998 to 2002 -- was squeezed out by RIAA pressure, so we figure anything is possible in the future.

Starvation didn't wipe out saber-toothed cats

Saber-toothed cats apparently did not go extinct for lack of prey, contradicting a popular explanation for why they died off, fossil evidence now suggests.

Even near their extinction, saber-toothed cats likely had enough to eat, researchers noted.

Saber-toothed cats, American lions, woolly mammoths and other giant creatures once roamed across the American landscape. However, at the end of the late Pleistocene about 12,000 years ago, these "megafauna" went extinct, a die-off called the Quaternary extinction.

"The popular theory for the megafaunal extinction is that either the changing climate at the end of the last ice age or human activity, or some combination of the two, killed off most of the large mammals," said researcher Larisa DeSantis, a vertebrate paleontologist at Vanderbilt University in Nashville.

  1. Science news from NBCNews.com

    1. The year's top ancient mysteries (and missteps)

The past year saw plenty of controversy over ancient mysteries ? and we're not just talking about Maya prophecies. So what happened to "Franken-saurus," the Gospel of Jesus' Wife and the plan to clone a woolly mammoth?

    3. Weird Science 2012: Sex, drugs and doomsday
    4. Peru's mysterious Nazca Lines form a labyrinth

"In the case of the great cats, we expect that it would have been increasingly difficult for them to find prey, especially if had to compete with humans. We know that when food becomes scarce, carnivores like the great cats tend to consume more of the carcasses they kill. If they spent more time chomping on bones, it should cause detectable changes in the wear patterns on their teeth."

Tale of the teeth
To learn more about saber-toothed diets, the researchers analyzed the fossil teeth of 15 saber-toothed cats (Smilodon fatalis) and 15 American lions (Panthera atrox) recovered from the La Brea tar pits in Los Angeles. These specimens ranged from about 11,500 to 35,000 years in age.

To study the fossils, the scientists used dental microwear texture analysis, developed by anthropologist Peter Ungar at the University of Arkansas. This involves using generating three-dimensional images of a tooth's surface. The image is then analyzed for microscopic grooves ? devouring red meat produces small parallel scratches, while biting on bones lead to larger, deeper pits.

The investigation found the pattern of wear on the teeth of the saber-toothed cat most closely resembled those of present-day African lions, which sometimes crush bone when they eat. The wear pattern on American lion teeth, on the other hand, echoed that of the present-day cheetah, which deliberately avoids bones when it feeds. [ Photos: A Lion's Life ]

Analysis of both older fossils and more recent ones did not reveal any evidence that patterns of wear changed over time, and none had extreme microwear like living hyenas, which consume entire carcasses, bones included. This suggests that prey for these carnivores was not scarce ? the animals were not gnawing their victims to the bone.

"Tooth wear patterns suggest that these cats were not desperately consuming entire carcasses, as was expected, and instead seemed to be living the 'good life' during the late Pleistocene, at least up until the very end," DeSantis said.

Big predator extinction
Past research of teeth from American lions, saber-tooth cats, dire wolves and coyotes from La Brea revealed they experienced three times the number of broken teeth of contemporary predators, hinting that these species were having trouble finding prey and were thus urgently devouring or "processing" whole carcasses. This led scientists to suspect that climate change and human competition were making life tough for the big predators.

Instead, DeSantis and her colleagues argue this high rate of damage seen in teeth more likely resulted during capture of prey instead of feeding on carcasses.

"We expected extinct carnivores to show evidence for extreme bone processing, based on the high number of broken teeth determined from prior research. Finding the complete opposite pattern was shocking!" DeSantis said.

The researchers noted that saber-toothed cats were about the size of today's African lion, while the American lion was about 25 percent larger. They fed on giants such as mammoths and four-ton giant ground sloths. The fact these ancient carnivores and their prey were bigger than contemporary predators and their victims could help explain why the extinct cats had more broken teeth than their living brethren, the investigators said. . [ Gallery: Today's Threatened Mammals ]

Specifically, larger teeth break more easily than smaller teeth, so larger carnivores may be likely to break more teeth when attempting to take down larger prey. The researchers noted past studies that found the canines of a predator the size of fox can support more than seven times the fox's weight before breaking, while a carnivore the size of lion can only support about four times its weight and the curved teeth of saber-toothed cats could only support about twice the animal's weight.

"The net result of our study is to raise questions about the reigning hypothesis that 'tough times' during the late Pleistocene contributed to the gradual extinction of large carnivores," DeSantis said. "While we can not determine the exact cause of their demise, it is unlikely that the extinction of these cats was a result of gradually declining prey."

Currently, the scientists are examining other carnivores at the La Brea tar pits, "including the extinct giant short-faced bear and the extant mountain lion that is found both during the Pleistocene at La Brea and in southern California and elsewhere today," DeSantis told LiveScience.

"Essentially, we are trying to clarify the biology and diets of these carnivores during the past to further evaluate why the short-faced bear went extinct and, potentially, why the mountain lion did not."

DeSantis and Ungar, with their colleagues Blaine Schubert and Jessica Scott, detailed their findings online Dec. 26 in the journal PLOS ONE.

Kay leads Cincinnati over Duke 48-34 in Belk Bowl

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) ? All Cincinnati Bearcats quarterback Brendon Kay wanted was one more chance.

He got it thanks to Cincinnati's defense.

The Bearcats forced Josh Snead's fumble at the Cincinnati 5 with 1:20 left and Kay threw an 83-yard touchdown pass to tight end Travis Kelce with 44 seconds to go, lifting Cincinnati and interim coach Steve Stripling to an improbable 48-34 win over the Duke Blue Devils on Thursday night.

"We were figuring we might get one more shot as an offense and when we got the fumble we looked at each other and said we've worked way too hard to quit now," Kay said.

Kay, who set a Belk Bowl record with four touchdown passes and was named the game's MVP, called it a "huge win" given the adversity the Bearcats faced after losing coach Butch Jones and their two coordinators three weeks ago.

"It's really been chaos for the last month ... pure chaos," Kay said. "We've played it off as it hasn't been, but it was pure chaos from the time we found out (Jones) he was leaving."

Almost as chaotic as their latest win.

It looked as though the Bearcats were about done when Duke was deep in their territory and looking for the go-ahead score with 1:20 left in the game.

But Snead fumbled and Kay capitalized with his go-ahead pass to Kelce. Nick Temple capped the wild finish with a 55-yard interception return with 14 seconds left.

Kay quickly took advantage of the change in momentum after the Snead fumble, finding Kelce down the middle on a seam route. Kelce got behind the Duke defense and caught the ball in stride, racing the final 60 yards to the end zone as Blue Devils fans looked on in stunned silence.

It was a play called Left Texas 60, Y Go Burst, with three receivers running seam routes.

"I threw the ball and I was just hoping he would turn and look," Kay said. "He wasn't looking until the last second and it worked out great."

Kay also threw a 41-yard touchdown pass to Ralph David Abernathy, and 25-yard scoring strikes to Anthony McClung and Chris Moore. George Winn also ran for a 46-yard touchdown for Cincinnati.

"I felt like a point guard dishing out the ball," Kay said. "The guys were making plays."

Cincinnati (10-3) finished with its fifth 10-win season in six years.

"That was one of our goals," Stripling said.

Duke quarterback Sean Renfree threw for 358 yards ? another Belk Bowl record ? for the Blue Devils (6-7), who were seeking their first bowl win since 1961. Conner Vernon, the ACC's all-time leader in receptions and receiving yards, had 10 catches for 119 yards and a touchdown in his final game for the Blue Devils.

But the big play for Duke was Snead's fumble.

"It's heartbreaking because we wanted to win this game for our seniors," Snead said. "But as a team, we're going to learn from this and build off the momentum from this. I've got great teammates. They encouraged me to keep my head up. If you have a little adversity, you've got to face it."

Duke coach David Cutcliffe said the loss was tough to swallow.

"This feeling in our guts is not very good right now," he said. "But we're going to move forward with this. The biggest insult we can give our seniors is to not move forward from this and we will do this."

Duke, which came in having allowed 51 points and an average of 294.5 yards rushing over its previous four games, struggled to stop Cincinnati after the first quarter.

The Bearcats piled up 554 total yards of offense, including 130 yards on the ground by Winn. Duke wasn't too shabby on offense, either, combining with the Bearcats for a Belk Bowl-record 1,114 yards.

Cincinnati trailed 16-0 before rattling off 27 straight points to seemingly take control, and the big turning point came courtesy of linebacker Greg Blair.

With Duke leading 16-3 and looking for more, Renfree fired a pass over the middle for running back Jela Duncan, who lunged for the goal line but was hit by Blair and fumbled. Blair recovered and suddenly the Bearcats had a shot.

"That seemed to fire us up on the sidelines," Blair said. "It gave us some life."

A short time later, Kay connected with McClung to cut the Duke lead to 16-10. Kay's second scoring pass to Abernathy capped a 98-yard drive in the final two minutes of the first half and gave the Bearcats their first lead.

NOTES: Duke punter Will Monday set a Belk Bowl record with a 79-yard punt. ... The two teams set a combined record for most first downs in the Belk Bowl.

Whale dies after getting stranded on NYC beach

By Miranda Leitsinger, NBC News

?

NEW YORK -- An emaciated 60-foot finback whale that washed up on a coastal community devastated by Superstorm Sandy has died, marine officials said Thursday.

The whale was found beached on Wednesday in Breezy Point, Queens, where more than 100 homes burned down and more than 2,000 were damaged during the Oct. 29 storm. It was carried out at high tide but washed ashore another time on Thursday, where marine officials said they found it dead, according to media reports.

?Biologists have confirmed that the whale has died,? Mendy Garron, a marine mammal rescue specialist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), told Reuters. ?Plans are currently being developed for necropsy and disposal of the carcass."

PhotoBlog: Finback whale beached at Breezy Point

Finback whales are an endangered species. They are second in size only to the blue whale, and can reach up to 70 feet in length and weigh up to 70 tons. The whales migrate to equatorial waters in the fall and during winter, they mostly fast, surviving on their fat reserves. Winter is also when they mate, and calves are born one year later, according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

It is one of the fastest large whales and can stay underwater for up to 50 minutes off of one breath.

Rob DiGiovanni, executive director of the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation told NBC New York on Wednesday that the whale was ?severely emaciated? and ?underweight. The outcome does not look good.?

Calls placed Thursday seeking comment to the foundation and NOAA were not immediately returned.

The whale was found on the bay side of the community, which is tucked in by the Atlantic Ocean and Jamaica Bay. With most homes rendered uninhabitable by the storm, many residents have had to move away and make daily trips to continue repairs.

Breezy Point, a private cooperative, was founded more than a century ago by Irish immigrants.

India gang-rape victim in Singapore for treatment

SINGAPORE (AP) ? A young woman who was gang-raped and assaulted on a moving bus in the Indian capital was flown Thursday to a Singapore hospital for treatment of severe internal injuries that could last several weeks, officials said.

The 23-year-old student, who is in critical condition, arrived in Singapore on an air ambulance and was admitted to the Mount Elizabeth hospital, renowned for multi-organ transplant facilities.

The hospital said in a statement that she was admitted to the intensive care unit "in an extremely critical condition." It said "she is being examined and the hospital is working with the Indian High Commission (embassy)."

The Dec. 16 rape of the woman and her brutal beating triggered widespread protests in New Delhi and other parts of the country and calls for the death penalty for the perpetrators of rape. It is punishable by up to life in prison.

All six suspects in the case have been arrested.

The rape has highlighted the extensive harassment that Indian women face daily in cities and towns, ranging from unwanted hands being placed on them to being blamed for causing the sexual violence. Even rape victims rarely come forward to complain because of the social stigma. Many women say they have structured their entire lives around protecting themselves and their children, and restricting their movements to avoid being molested.

In a written statement, the Indian High Commission, or embassy, said it has received "many offers to help" the woman, who is "receiving full medical attention." Her family is also being provided all assistance" by the embassy, it said.

The nearly daily protests in the heart of New Delhi following the rape have been frequently quelled by police using tear gas and water cannons. One policemen died of injuries suffered in the clashes.

Police said she was traveling with a male friend in a bus when they were attacked by six men who took turns to rape her. The men also beat the couple with iron rods, stripped them of their clothes and threw them off the bus on a road. They were found by bystanders before being rushed to New Delhi's Safdarjang Hospital. The bus, which was empty except for the attackers and the couple, drove through the city for hours during the assault, even passing through police checkpoints.

Press Trust of India quoted hospital medical superintendent, B.D. Athani, as saying Wednesday night that the woman suffered severe intestinal and abdominal injuries. She underwent three surgeries and parts of her intestines were removed, he said.

He said the Indian government, "based on the advice of a team of doctors," made arrangements for her to be shifted to Singapore's Mount Elizabeth hospital because it has state of the art multi-organ transplant facilities. Also, the travel time of 5 ? hours from New Delhi was considered less arduous.

"With fortitude and courage, the (woman) survived the aftereffects of the injuries so far well. But the condition continues to be critical," he was quoted as saying. "The treatment (in Singapore) might take longer."

The woman was on ventilator support during the 10 days she was at Safdarjang Hospital.

Press Trust of India said the Indian government will bear all expenses of the woman's treatment. Doctors have described her as "psychologically composed and optimistic about future."

It said her condition worsened late Wednesday after her pulse plummeted briefly, and that periodic bouts of infection were also a source of concern.

BEER-SHEVA, Israel, December 27, 2012 -- Ben-Gurion University of the Negev's (BGU) Social Networks Security Research Group in its Department of Information Systems Engineering has developed a novel method to predict how well or badly a student will perform in an academic course.

The information can be used to determine which students need the most help, as well as which ones excel and might be guided to further study or careers in that subject area. The paper, "Predicting Student Exam Scores by Analyzing Social Network Data," was presented earlier this month at the Advanced Media Technology Conference in Macau, Hong Kong.

According to co-author and Ph.D. student Michael Fire, "While most papers about social network analysis deal solely with information gathered online, this study draws some of the information used for the generation of the network from the real world -- social interactions which were conducted off the grid."

The researchers analyzed data from a BGU course that included assignments submitted online and Web site logs (containing 10,759 entries) to construct social networks of explicit and implicit cooperation among the students. The implicit connections are used to model all the social interactions that happened "offline" among the students: e-mails with questions, conversations in the lab while preparing the assignments and even course forums.

"These connections were very important, as we sought to model the social interactions within the student body," Fire explains.

In addition to analyzing the online submissions of the students who had to work in pairs or in groups, they also tracked login time and computer usage. For instance, if two students submitted their assignments from the same computer, it was a likely indication that the two had worked together to complete the assignment. If two students submitted assignments from different computers, but one right after the other on more than one occasion, the authors gave a value to that data, as well.

"One explanation for what we discovered is that your friends influence your grade in the course, so, if you pick your friends well, then you will get a higher grade," Fire says. "Alternatively, social networks in courses offer conditions whereby good students will pair with other good students and similarly weaker ones will pair with other weaker students." he continued.
