Alexandra and Christian have filled their downtown Los Angeles loft with vintage, antique and family heirloom pieces. Yet, to bring out their love of the urban environment where their building is located (Downtown LA) they are now starting to lean in a more "edgy" direction design wise.

"The vintage rustic is still our base but we're slowly starting to try and update and bring in some more modern pieces - for example, the couch we're planning to purchase in the next 6 months will be modern and dark grey and will replace a very 'Pottery Barn' green couch." explains Alexandra. While walking through their spacious loft, the most charming elements contribute to the well loved and lived in "feeling" they've created for themselves. Roomy enough to house a cat and a dog, this loft offers a wide open floor plan and wonderful views of the historic buildings all around them.

"Function and form combined" Alexandra says are the most essential parts of designing a home. While they have an assortment of seating and places to lay about, they also have a well stocked modern kitchen to prepare a hearty dinner. My favorite personal touches were the all the family hand me downs of gorgeous old furniture. These are the touches that hold the most significance to them; "The pieces with family history - the rocker my mom breast fed me in, the dining room table my husband's grandfather built and the day bed my husband slept in as a child."

Inspiration: Vintage anything. The older, more worn, more history the better. I looove finding furniture & d?cor on the side of the road, lugging it home and fixing it up.

Favorite Element: Furniture that has been built by family members. Our dining room table and living room day bed where built by my husband's grandpa and the coffee table was built by his father (unfortunately my husband didn't inhert the carpentry gene ?). Not only are these pieces gorgeous but they are a source of pride for my husband and me.

Biggest Challenge: Keeping clutter contained in a small but open space.

What Friends Say: My best friend has always loved the mood that I create in rooms using lighting. Lighting is crucial. I've never met an overhead that I like and blinds turned in the downward position is one of my biggest pet peeves.

Biggest Embarrassment: The couch...let's just say that we probably won't let the dog on our next one...

Best Advice: In a small space where you don't have any walls to hide one room from another things get super cluttered super fast. Try to keep surfaces as clear as possible. I'm constantly pairing down on surface d?cor and then every few weeks I swap out objects for ones that I've put away so that I get a chance to enjoy all of my things ?. Also pretty patterned paper in frames makes for wonderful, beautiful and most importantly, cheap, art!

Cardinals beat Cubs 2-1 on wild pitch in 9th

ST. LOUIS - The Cardinals kept their faint wild-card hopes alive when Carlos Marmol forced home the tying run with a bases-loaded walk to Ryan Theriot with two outs in the ninth inning and followed with a game-ending wild pitch, giving St. Louis a 2-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Saturday.

After losing consecutive games to the New York Mets and Cubs, the Cardinals began the day three games back of the wild-card leading Atlanta Braves. St. Louis plays the Cubs again Sunday, then closes with three games at Houston.

Jason Motte (5-2) got two outs for the win when St. Louis ended a string of 15 consecutive scoreless innings.

Marmol (2-6) blew a save for the 10th time in 44 opportunities.

Rodrigo Lopez worked six scoreless innings and Andrew Cashner and Sean Marshall each worked a perfect inning before the Cardinals' rally that began with a single by Matt Holliday and a pair of two-out walks to Yadier Molina and Skip Schumaker.

Theriot walked on a full count. Marmol started Rafael Furcal with a ball, then threw the next pitch in the dirt to the backstop as pinch-runner Adron Chambers scored standing up.

Holliday returned after a nine-game absence due to an injury to his right hand and Furcal was back at shortstop after committing a crucial error on a potential double-play Thursday, sparking the Mets' six-run rally. Furcal had made five errors in six games.

The Cubs bunched three of their six hits in the first, including Alfonso Soriano's RBI single off Kyle Lohse.

Lohse had a season-high eight strikeouts and didn't allow a runner in scoring position his last six innings, retiring 10 in a row at one point. He has allowed 17 first-inning runs this year.

Albert Pujols walked in the sixth and has reached safely in 40 consecutive games, breaking a tie with Johnny Damon for the longest in the majors this season.

Islamic nations criticize Israel over nukes (AP)

VIENNA ? Islamic nations at a 151-nation conference have demanded that Israel open its nuclear program to international view, asserting that its undeclared atomic arms program is a threat to Mideast peace.

Iran says Israel's "nuclear arsenal threatens the world." Lebanon, speaking for the Arab group, says Israel's refusal to open up its secretive nuclear program could lead to a Mideast arms race "with unpredictable consequences."

They spoke Friday as the International Atomic Energy Agency passed a resolution calling on all Middle East states to adopt the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty. That's an indirect demand on Israel, the only country in the region not bound by the treaty.

Unlike in past years, however, Arab states did not push for a resolution directly targeting Israel as a threat to Middle East peace.

Twin study reveals epigenetic alterations of psychiatric disorders

In the first study to systematically investigate genome-wide epigenetic differences in a large number of psychosis discordant twin-pairs, research at the Institute of Psychiatry (IoP) at King's College London provides further evidence that epigenetic processes play an important role in neuropsychiatric disease. Published in Human Molecular Genetics, the findings may offer potential new avenues for treatment.

Previous quantitative genetic analyses of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder reveal strong inherited components to both. However, although heritability for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder is estimated at 70%, disease concordance between twin-pairs is far from 100%, indicating that non-genetic factors play an important role in the onset of the diseases.

Dr. Jonathan Mill, lead author of the study at the IoP says, 'We studied a group of 22 identical twin-pairs, so 44 individuals in all, one of the largest twin studies performed for any complex disease to date. In each twin-pair, one had either schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. Because we know that twins are genetically identical, we can rule out any genetic cause of illness in the affected twin the aim of our study was to investigate epigenetic variations associated with these disorders.'

Epigenetic mechanisms are linked to heritable, but reversible, changes in gene expression without a change in the underlying DNA sequence. This happens principally through alterations in DNA methylation and chromatin structure. Epigenetic changes in the brain have previously been associated with a range of biological and cognitive processes, including neurogenesis, drug addiction and neurodegeneration. It has also been suggested that epigenetic changes in the brain may be involved in a spectrum of psychiatric disorders including psychosis.

The researchers looked at differences in DNA methylation across the genome using DNA taken from both the affected and unaffected twins in each monozygotic twin-pair. The findings were then compared to DNA samples taken from post-mortem brain material from psychosis patients and controls.

Whilst the researchers found no alterations in overall DNA methylation content between affected and unaffected twins, there were considerable disease-associated differences between twins at specific sites across the genome. The findings confirmed previously known sites implicated in psychiatric disorders as well as revealing previously unknown ones.

Dr. Mill adds, 'Our findings suggest that it is not only genetic variations that are important. The epigenetic differences we see may tell us more about the causes or schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, as some alterations were specific to either disease. Importantly, epigenetic processes are potentially reversible meaning that our research could open up new avenues for the development of novel therapeutic drugs.'

Proactive Data Security Measures Crucial to Ensure Customer Trust ...

Internet has created manifold advantages and possibilities for businesses. The growth of e-commerce has allowed organizations to reach out to new markets, increase productivity, streamline decision making, avail services of diverse human capital, and easily adapt to changing customer tastes and needs. Cyber marketing has become the most convenient and rewarding way of promoting product and brand name. Internet has removed the barriers in communication between the manufacturer and the end-user. Internet technology not only enables businesses to sell their products online, but also makes easier to solicit customer feedback and preferences. As such, organizations have loads of personal and financial information related to customers. The next step would be to identify the people who have access to such data, the flow of such data and initiate steps to secure the data. Threats to data security are both internal and external. Internal threats are in the form of unauthorized access and use of social engineering techniques to extract information among others. Organizations may restrict user access and adopt proper password management practices to prevent unauthorized access. Default passwords on software products must be replaced by stronger passwords. External threats exploit vulnerabilities in information infrastructure and employee negligence among others. Employees must be guided on password management practices, safe use of social media sites use and storage of laptop devices, threats to wireless devices and cyber security tips through e-learning programs and training sessions. They may also collaborate with educational institutions to impart training on cyber security, data protection, and incident management through online degree courses.

Hiring professionals qualified in masters of security science and information security certifications could help organizations in proper assessment of threat vectors and remediating measures. IT professionals must identify and install requisite updates to IT products and devices. They must also protect computer systems, networks and e-mail services from malware and virus attacks. Installation of latest intrusion detection and prevention mechanisms could help in timely detect and respond to external intrusions.

Websites act as interface between the organization and end-user. However, websites are prone to SQL injection, i-frame injection, cross-site scripting and other security threats. As such, organizations may adhere to security guidelines issued by Internet security firms and reinforce website security in accordance with latest threats.

Organizations must also address the training needs of IT professionals. They must be encouraged to undertake security certifications, online university degree programs, and participate in security conferences to enable them to understand and combat constantly evolving cyber threats.

Texas Rep. Ron Paul is gaining new reasons to tout his continuing underdog campaign for president: a win in California's Republican party straw poll this weekend. Paul's victory comes on the heels of several independent polls of the GOP field placing him in the top tier of presidential hopefuls.

Paul placed first with 44.9 percent of the vote at Saturday's California straw poll of state party members, associate members and registered guests. That total placed him far above second-place finisher Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who received 29.3 percent. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney--who, like Paul, ran for president in 2008--came in third with 8.8 percent.

"This win is just the latest indication of our campaign's growing momentum," Paul campaign chairman Jesse Benton said in a statement.

Paul is notorious for winning straw polls, since he has an extremely motivated corps of followers who turn out en masse for voting contests based on limited participation. However, such victories have yet to translate into broader backing among GOP voters; in 2008, he failed to place first in any GOP primary or caucus contest. But Paul's campaign says that dynamic has shifted in the 2012 cycle--and can point to additional polling numbers to make their case.

Several recent independent national polls measuring the appeal of GOP candidates suggest Paul has been inching up. A CNN/ORC International poll released last week showed Paul in fourth place behind Perry, Romney and Sarah Palin. But since the former Alaska governor hasn't yet entered the 2012 race, that makes Paul the de facto third-place candidate in the CNN survey.

Paul also placed third in a Gallup poll released Aug. 24 when Palin was not included.

Both polls suggest that Paul's gain has been Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann's loss. As Bachmann has dipped in the polls, Paul has risen.

Meanwhile, apart from questions surrounding his national standing, Paul continues to capitalize on his ability to quickly raise giant sums online. His campaign announced that it had raised more than $1 million Saturday during a Constitution Day one-day "moneybomb" fundraiser--held the same day as California's straw poll.

Paul, like the other current GOP contenders, benefits from the absence of Republican excitement over the party's presidential field. Many national polls show President Obama losing to a generic Republican but narrowly besting most of the current GOP contenders.

Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels (R) recently revealed that he is also dismayed over the GOP's present range of presidential choices and has?attempted to recruit three or four other candidates to join the 2012 race.

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. - This year's Emmys are driving some nominees to drink.

Several celebrities teased on the red carpet Friday night at the Emmy performers nominee reception that they would start imbibing early in order to prepare for Sunday's Primetime Emmys, the three-hour ceremony honoring all things television at the Nokia Theatre in downtown Los Angeles.

"Friday Night Lights" actress Connie Britton hoped to enjoy "some caviar and champagne" with her best girlfriends as she primps for the show, while "So You Think You Can Dance" host Cat Deeley revealed that she would partake in a "margarita and a swim" before the ceremony.

The plan for "Mildred Pierce" actress Melissa Leo was decidedly more dry.

"Everything is all picked out," said Leo. "There is no last-minute decisions for me, so I'll probably hop in the lovely little sauna over there at my hotel, and have a nice little sit in there, probably have a little something to eat early in the day ? better than later on in the day. Eventually, the team will come over and start fluffing and primping."

Leo, who won a supporting actress Oscar for her role in "The Fighter" earlier this year, is nominated in the outstanding supporting actress in a miniseries or a movie category. Deeley is a first-time nominee in the outstanding reality TV host category, while Britton is up for her second time as outstanding lead actress in a drama series.

Dozens of this year's celebrity nominees were feted during an annual pre-Emmy soiree at Wolfgang Puck's Spectra inside the Pacific Design Center. On a stage out on the event space's balcony, nominees were presented with certificates by Academy of Television Arts and Sciences chairman John Schaffner, who individually posed for photos with each nominee.
