As many as 75% of US riders plan to put their motorcycles in storage for the duration of the winter months. This trend comes as no surprise, as riding in near-freezing temperatures takes intense caution, preparation, and expensive heated gloves, grips, and apparel than can total several hundred dollars. There is also the constant worry of black ice or becoming marooned in snow-storms ? all of which influences many a motorcyclist to put his or her motorcycle into winter storage.
However, a recent survey of riders conducted by Swinton Bikes revealed that nearly one-third of all UK riders were storing their motorcycles with inadequate protection and facilities. We do not have similar statistics available here in the US, but it would be no great leap of logic to suspect that many bikes across our own nation will not be stored properly this winter. That could, of course, lead to unhappy surprises once the spring thaw hits: damaged bikes, ill-running motors, and dangerous wear-and-tear.
Here are quick ? but highly useful ? tips regarding motorcycle winter storage:
- Stabilizing Fuel: when a bike is stored, moisture has a habit of creeping into the fuel supply. Obviously, this could can lead to a motor which won?t start come springtime. There are a couple of proven methods of combating this issue. First off, you can simply be sure to run the engine at least once a week. However, it?s easy to neglect this chore, especially if your bike is stored in the back of a garage, shed, or storage facility. Therefore, it?s smart to undertake a second method: buy a fluid such as STA-BIL which is meant to preserve and stabilize the gasoline in your tank during storage. It?s not too expensive, and could save you a lot of hassle.
- Preserving Battery Charge: many riders don?t realize that bikes and their electrical systems can pull a small amount of charge even when the ignition is off. Over the course of a single winter, that could totally drain your battery. Ask anyone who works at a motorcycle shop, dealership, or specialized store like Batteries Plus. When spring hits, shelves are cleaned out of new batteries ? a $50 to $80 cost for each rider which is totally preventable. The best method is to put your battery on an automated battery tender. This type of device will ensure that your battery retains power within being overcharged.
- Oil Viscosity: if your bike will be forced to endure very cold temperatures, you may need to replace your oil with a grade better suited to winter conditions. After all, oil loses viscosity in cold weather. Speak to a local mechanic or motorcycle expert for recommendations tailored to the local climate.
- Breathable Cover: too many bike covers don?t breathe properly, thus allowing moisture to collect underneath ? right against your bike! Too prevent undue moisture accrual, select a cover which is sufficiently breathable. Even if the bike is stored inside, a cover is highly recommended to protect against dust, light from windows (which can fade paint after long exposure), insects, and other issues.
When it comes to winter storage for motorcycles, taking into account these simple tips mean the difference between the spring thaw being a time of fun or hassle.
