Travel Survey Provides Vacation Inspiration for Summer Stragglers ...

If you haven?t already planned your summer vacation, you may glean some destination inspiration from the results of a summer traveler survey by TripAdvisor.

Kicking off the season with Memorial Day Weekend May 25-28, 34% of survey respondents plan to take full advantage of the three-day weekend with a change of scenery. Expect busy roadways, as 70% of Memorial Day travelers plan to drive according to the survey.

Planning ahead, summer leisure travel may see a modest surge this summer over last year, as 86% of surveyed travelers say they plan leisure trips this summer, compared to 81% last year. Travel budgets are increasing as well, with 27% saying they will spend more on trips this year, but 47% plan to spend the same amount.

While some consumers are willing to open their wallets a little wider, other travelers remain cost-conscious. The survey revealed that 21% of respondents would drive the distance to save a dollar, and they would be willing to drive more than 10 hours to save on airfare. For the last-minute vacationers, 79% said they would fly by the seat of their pants and take a spontaneous trip if they found deals with significant savings.

As for accommodations, the majority of travelers (70%) prefer hotels, but 30% plan to stay with family or friends. Urban destinations outrank all other summer hot spots this year, with 58% of travelers headed for major metropolitan areas. Beach babes/bums comprise 41% of survey participants who plan to flock to the oceans. National parks and lakes are drawing 20% and 18% of travelers, respectively, where as resorts claim 16%.

Regionally, the Northeast is the most popular of those surveyed claiming 35% of interest, followed by Western states at 31%. Unsurprisingly, respondents rated New York City, Las Vegas, and Chicago as the top three cities to visit this summer. Other destination motivation includes 40% visiting their favorite place or because it?s tradition (think Grand Canyon) while 27% plan to go somewhere new this year.
