President Obama and Michelle Obama are pushing companies to hire more U.S. military veterans. They said Tuesday that, through a program called Joining Forces, employers have hired or trained 290,000 veterans since August 2011. Through short stories and photos, Yahoo News asked veterans whether they've found work since the start of the 2007 recession or, if not, how their job hunt is going.
FIRST PERSON | Who wouldn't want to hire a veteran of both the U.S. Marines and the U.S. Army? Someone who had been under fire and who had dealt with high pressure situations both in training and in combat? What about if this individual also was completing his master's degree? Seems like a no-brainer, right?
Two years into my job search I was still asking myself this question. I'd applied for hundreds of jobs both here in Chicago and around the country. I knew what I wanted, and I wasn't going to settle for anything less.
On a whim, I took time off from my current job and attended the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) job fair, and that's where I met CDW, a nationwide technology products and services provider. Two weeks later I was offered a position as a senior sales analyst, and it's been great ever since.
A lack of corporate experience looks bad on a resume, but physically standing in front of an employer and being able to let them see your composure and ability to stand up to the pressure of an interview was the chance I needed to finally get my dream job.
